Experts have issued a warning about a potential “mega tsunami” that could sweep away entire communities with its massive waves.
Alaska, Hawaii and the West Coast of the mainland US face an ongoing threat due to how close they are to disaster zones — and the West Coast just received a renewed warning.
A new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences revealed that an earthquake could erupt along the Cascadia subduction zone, a fault that stretches from Northern Vancouver Island to Cape Mendocino, California. Researchers from Virginia Tech found that a potential powerful earthquake combined with rising sea levels could lead to a mega tsunami, most severely impacting residents and properties in Northern California, northern Oregon and southern Washington.
A mega tsunami is a disastrous wave caused by the displacement of ocean water, which can be triggered by earthquakes, landslides or volcanic eruptions.

well.. alaska... but... mercowski... so...
You also noticed the BS about rising sea levels somehow being a factor in a potential tsunami.
They’re predicting a 1000ft tsunami as supposedly elevated by a (wildly exaggerated) 1.5ft/century sea level rise due to anthropogenic carbon dioxide.
Does anybody else here detect an insignificant human contribution?
.
Have you tried a glass of warm milk?
Or a shot of bourbon maybe?
These terms are acceptable.
I’m rooting for that one in the Canary Islands and 1000 foot tall wave flushing the toilet on the east coast.
SanFran could use a really giid washout. Sacremento too.
“a potential powerful earthquake combined with rising sea levels…” Why do they persist in this drivel? The sea level is rising about two mm per year. Big contribution to “1000-foot tall mega tsunami,” isn’t it.
I’m rooting for that one in the Canary Islands and 1000 foot tall wave flushing the toilet on the east coast.
Wash all the scum off the streets.
Cost? I’m pretty sure only a high speed rail line running the length of California could prevent this catastrophe, and it would be cheap by comparison. Cost is no object. Gavin Newsom will be along with the studies in a day or two.
God is in charge - but physics also plays a part. The height of a tsunami is related to the displacement of the earth in the ocean. The Indonesian EQ (Christmas, ~ 2000?) cause a tsunami that was about 100 feet (30m) tall in some places. (The shape and depth of the shoreline/beach/shelf also plays a part.) That was about the largest displacement possible, so the largest tsunami from an EQ is about 100 feet.
HOWEVER. I thought the article would be about an island or land mass falling into the ocean. That CAN cause a huge tsunami. IIRC they estimate a 1000 foot wave hitting the East Coast if a huge landslide from Canary Islands(?) breaks off (there is a fault/fracture zone there). Similar for some island in Hawaii.
In Alaska back 40 to 80 years ago there was a landslide at the head of some bay and it caused a tsunami in the narrow, restricted channel that was more than 1500 feet tall! A man and his son(?) rode the wave out on a boat iirc.
They claim the cause is a prolonged drought that has lasted eons because of it's desert environment.
Researchers at North Dakota Tech further claim the risk increases, with each passing day, unless there is a 1,000 foot tsunami on the west coast of the California.
LOL!
That is the most accurate and factual statement that someone can ever utter... And if you’re an atheist it really sucks. If you believe in an afterlife... It isn’t all that bad because you have something to look forward to. Sadly, California is full of atheist.
I must have read about the Canary Island’s “mega-tsunami” in TIME magazine. The USGS says that modelling of the volcanic activity and slope failure could cause a tsunami with a height of 1 to 2 meters (3 to 7 feet).
