Sesame Street heads to Netflix after Trump pulled funding

Sesame Street and Netflix have struck a deal that will see the popular TV show appear on the streaming platform, after US President Donald Trump pulled funding for the free-to-air channel Public Broadcasting Service (PBS).

Netflix said the iconic programme is a "beloved cornerstone of children's media, enchanting young minds and nurturing a love of learning".

Netflix will offer its 300 million subscribers a new season of the show and 90 hours of previous episodes, and it will still also be available on PBS.

Sesame Street was also facing an uncertain future after entertainment giant Warner Bros Discovery, which owns the HBO platform, did not renew its deal with the half a century old programme.

Earlier this month, Trump issued an executive order to block federal funding for PBS and the National Public Radio (NPR) network, alleging they engaged in "biased and partisan news coverage".

Good for Sesame Street.

Don’t want to see them tank. But there is no reason why government should be in that business. That is 100% something which should be in the private sector.

Excellent! That’s how “the media” should work!

I don’t understand why they keep making new episodes. Aren’t they all mostly the same? Aren’t there already so many episodes that if a small child began watching the series from the start, they’d age out long before seeing every episode?

How could we make Sesame Street better?

What they need is to revamp the program. Along with learning ABC’s and numbers, they should have a segment where all the characters, human and Muppet, gather around a Muppet character who plays a veteran, named Bubba, dressed in jeans and camo, who reads the Constitution and explains it in a way even a child can understand.

Big Bird: “ Wow, Mr. Bubba...According to the 2nd Amendment, you mean the government has no right to restrict what kind of firearm you can own?”

Bubba: (in a Southern drawl) “ That’s right, Big Bird. Y’all are learnin’.”

That’s what Schoolhouse Rock was for.

This is the civics lesson I learned from watching kids' TV in the 1970s:

This headline is meant to be technically true (they are starting on Netflix after the funding was cut) but imply a lie of causality. The deal to move to Netflix was made BEFORE funding for NPR was cut.

Sesame Street brings in hundreds of millions in money for merchandising. And as you can see, it is something the private sector will sponsor, unlike a lot of the pablum on the network.

winning.

The more streaming media channels pick up popular programs, the more PBS donations and member station donation telethon fundraisers will leave. I look forward to someone picking up the Viking sponsored Master Piece Theater and other popular and sponsored programs. Many more will spell the end to PBS.

What a false and misleading headline - it was on HBO and its streaming service before and PBS only got second run of the episodes. This show is a rich corporation. This has nothing to do with PBS funding.

Sesame Street’s original funders included the Ford Foundation and the Carnegie Corporation. They can find plenty of other donors.
