A one-of-a-kind Sam’s Club store opened Thursday in South Tampa after the company abruptly closed the location last year, turning a portion of the building into an online fulfillment center.

Thank you very much and God bless you.
It's a news article BUT as technology continues to advance I thought it interesting how they mentioned at least a couple of times that it was ___cashless____
I have always expected a cashless society to be our future.
I think it puts too much power in the hands of too few (see Canadian Truckers during COVID-19(84) - plus all the tracking
As with anything, YMMV. So, FWIW
Short video - 1:45
Now Sam's Club is going this way in all stores - this is a pilot program from over 5 years ago
Truth be told I WAS looking for reports on Dartmouth, Boston U, University of North Caroline Chapel Hill, Florida State, Vanderbilt, etc. with their new hand-scanning tech.
Was hoping to find something from some student using the systems. Haven’t found it yet (other than the news we’ve seen here). Was hoping for some video - haven’t found it yet but haven’t done an exhaustive search yet.
They were trying to push this in the Sarasota store but it fizzled out as I never saw anyone using it. Almost as bad is 90% of the registers you have to scan yourself (which I don’t mind but if there is a problem there is no way to summon customer service, you’re just waving your arms like a mental patient). Same thing goes for of you have any alcoholic beverage where you need them to key in your age. Sam’s is not as good as BJ’s or Costco
I use that at Sam’s. Very convenient to pass the lines at checkout. Why Costco doesn’t do this is beyond me. Costco is a cluster ****.
I was just posting when I saw how OLD this video was.
But now it’s a REALITY or soon to be a REALITY at ALL Sam’s Club’s I believe.
They sure seemed happy about “cashless” (5 Years Ago)
WHAT could possibly go wrong? Especially if Biden’s EO 14067 gets fully-implemented (Digital Currency).
I know many don’t believe such control will happen.
I say COVID-19(84) was a wake-up call. Now a pandemic will be a hard-sell, next time around.
But Digital Currency will be a game-changer, IMHO.
They have been hyping cashless my entire lifetime.
As it it now, only around 16% of transactions involved actual cash.
So if your worry is control it’s already too late.
I had a big brother moment when Ic went into a Home Depot recently. They completely redesigned their checkout system where you need to get in a single line that wraps around merchandise that leads to the registers. You have to scan everything yourselves, but there are several employees serving more as security and anti theft watchers more than anything else. You get the dreadful feeling it is subliminal programming for when Big Brother gathers people and puts them on the trains in a single file. Many stores have been doing this for a while now. Bed Bath and Beyond was doing it years ago and I dreaded going there for that very reason. Goodwill industries does this, Michael’s crafters does this, and In sure there are others I’m forgetting
Exactly. Is already been getting more and more cashless for decades now with the end getting closer and closer
I use this type of scanning technology wherever it’s offered, including Meijer and BJ’s. (Used to use it at Kroger, too, but they discontinued it.) Many of these can auto-detect available discounts/unclipped coupons and add them when you scan an item.
I recently renewed my lapsed membership with Sam’s Club, which has offered Shop & Scan for years. But it’s been improved, with faster, more reliable detection of the bar codes, and an improved checkout that often allows you to just walk by the checkers at the exit who previously would scan your receipt or QR code and double-check an item or two. (The must have upgraded to a system that does a whole-cart check as you pass through their detector.)
It’s hard to imagine it getting any easier. Why wait in line?
Now they've just rolled out new technology that has cameras scan your cart when you walk under an archway near the exit, and confirms your Scan-and-Go purchases to the associate at the door who normally looks at your receipt.
I have been expecting these systems for years.
IBM advertised their smart store waaaay back in 2007. Very few implementations it seems (my pastor went through such a system in Singapore something like 15 years ago).
I imagine Costco will go with something similar.
I just wonder if this will eventually make its way to Walmart stores (that’s a LOT of stores, though). Seeing as how Sam’s Club is related to them.
Oh I don’t think you’re wrong LOL
Just that it’s more possible now than ever, I think.

Theft is INSANE at retail stores. Most stores do not want you to know how much is stolen, though the police presence will show some of it (they’re involved maybe 2%-4% of the time, it seems.
Yeah, there’s a good thread on it here already. I’ve got to add it to this one (a link)

Arches with cameras top and sides. Link to follow.
What if you don’t have a smart phone?
exactly
Costco rival (SAM’S CLUB) removing all self-checkout machines... and replacing them with something even worse

That’s interesting. I use scan and go at Sam’s and I did not know this. The last couple of times I went when I got to the door they waved me through in front of several black customers. I thought they were being racist.
