It's a news article BUT as technology continues to advance I thought it interesting how they mentioned at least a couple of times that it was ___cashless____
I have always expected a cashless society to be our future.
I think it puts too much power in the hands of too few (see Canadian Truckers during COVID-19(84) - plus all the tracking
As with anything, YMMV. So, FWIW

Now Sam's Club is going this way in all stores - this is a pilot program from over 5 years ago
They were trying to push this in the Sarasota store but it fizzled out as I never saw anyone using it. Almost as bad is 90% of the registers you have to scan yourself (which I don’t mind but if there is a problem there is no way to summon customer service, you’re just waving your arms like a mental patient). Same thing goes for of you have any alcoholic beverage where you need them to key in your age. Sam’s is not as good as BJ’s or Costco
I use that at Sam’s. Very convenient to pass the lines at checkout. Why Costco doesn’t do this is beyond me. Costco is a cluster ****.
They have been hyping cashless my entire lifetime.
As it it now, only around 16% of transactions involved actual cash.
So if your worry is control it’s already too late.
I use this type of scanning technology wherever it’s offered, including Meijer and BJ’s. (Used to use it at Kroger, too, but they discontinued it.) Many of these can auto-detect available discounts/unclipped coupons and add them when you scan an item.
I recently renewed my lapsed membership with Sam’s Club, which has offered Shop & Scan for years. But it’s been improved, with faster, more reliable detection of the bar codes, and an improved checkout that often allows you to just walk by the checkers at the exit who previously would scan your receipt or QR code and double-check an item or two. (The must have upgraded to a system that does a whole-cart check as you pass through their detector.)
It’s hard to imagine it getting any easier. Why wait in line?
Now they've just rolled out new technology that has cameras scan your cart when you walk under an archway near the exit, and confirms your Scan-and-Go purchases to the associate at the door who normally looks at your receipt.
What if you don’t have a smart phone?
I just want to say I invented scan and go. Unfortunately, I didn’t tell anyone. My idea was before cell phones and each cart would have a wireless scanner. You scanned your items as you put them in the cart, then you were charged automatically as you exited the store. I also invented the scan and go propane exchange. I didn’t tell anyone about that one, either. I coulda been rich.
Any place I go to that is cashless I turn right around and go elsewhere.
WEFMart rides again.
I bet they still have the receipt gestapo waiting at the door.
Not in Oklahoma (at least, not yet). If they do go ahead with that idea, they certainly don't need my business. I will cancel my membership that same day. Sam's doesn't really have anything I can't live without anyway.
If Sam’s goes to that, I’m done with them.
“Now Sam’s Club is going this way in all stores”
not our local Sam’s store: most of its patrons can barely work a SNAP or debit card ... if it ever went all Scan&GO, it would empty out and have to close in a week or two ...
I usually go to Sam’s once a month. This month I was shopping with toilet paper in the cart and a woman came up to me and asked me if I wanted to try the scan and go app. It would be really easy and I would save six dollars on my toilet paper.
I didn’t install the app and she could not believe I wouldn’t do it. But you’re gonna save six dollars she said! There were also several other employees with her looking at the incredulously.
