I had a big brother moment when Ic went into a Home Depot recently. They completely redesigned their checkout system where you need to get in a single line that wraps around merchandise that leads to the registers. You have to scan everything yourselves, but there are several employees serving more as security and anti theft watchers more than anything else. You get the dreadful feeling it is subliminal programming for when Big Brother gathers people and puts them on the trains in a single file. Many stores have been doing this for a while now. Bed Bath and Beyond was doing it years ago and I dreaded going there for that very reason. Goodwill industries does this, Michael’s crafters does this, and In sure there are others I’m forgetting

Theft is INSANE at retail stores. Most stores do not want you to know how much is stolen, though the police presence will show some of it (they’re involved maybe 2%-4% of the time, it seems.
