About ten years ago, I spoke with a friend from Austria. They were visiting the U.S. and we had the typical "Second Amendment" conversation that we usually have with Europeans. Then we talked about NATO and how Europe has been riding for free, i.e. very low, if any, military spending. I politely pressed them and they admitted that they couldn't afford all that "free stuff" if they had to build their military. And then the lady joked about depending on the U.S. to protect them. (snip)
It's refreshing to see that some voices in Europe are sounding the same theme. This is from an editorial on the Financial Times:
“If Europe wants to avoid war, Europe must get ready for war,” Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission president, said in March. Most European countries have finally confronted the need to spend big on rearmament, and started to mobilise the financing.
Now they need to spend the money wisely. They must avoid the trap of preparing to fight the last war, and instead leapfrog ahead in developing the technologies needed to fight, or hopefully deter, the next one.
Thank you, Ursula. Thank you for reminding your fellow Europeans of what President Washington said years ago: "To be prepared for war is one of the most effective means of preserving peace."
So when do you start making the tanks and bombs? Or drones
(snip)
I'm all for defense innovation to fight today's war. What's more important is that the Europeans come to terms with the fantasy that they've lived for too long. In other words, no one is going to defend you for free if you are not willing to fight for yourself.
So Ursula, get your gun and make sure that everyone else gets theirs too.

Thank you very much and God bless you.
One of the best things that has happened for the world is the US taking charge of NATO and European military responsibilities. Take a look a President Macron, Prime Minister Starmer and Chancellor Merz snorting coke on the train to Kiev and you quickly realize that the most dangerous things that these usurious, irresponsible and feckless losers can be trusted with are butter knives.
And then take look at their Ministers of Defense and realize that trust with butter knives is way too generous.
Get these morons re armed with serious weapons and the nukes will soon be flying all over the place
Does that mean everybody should have nuclear weapons? /rhetorical question
My take is the EU wants to use “threat” of war to create a European Army in order to pursue its authoritarian agenda on its member states. I don’t think they really fear Russian invasion at all.
I get your drift, and agree. But we cannot keep defending these unappreciative jerk nations.
Yes, their leaders are pathetic.
And yes, the ministers of defense couldn’t figure out how to fight their way out of a wet paper bag. But if tasked with DEI, I bet they’d be perfect.
Sooner or later something of a Hitler will emerge out that European mess, and we’ll get to do it all over again.
Ursula is a corrupt WEF Marxist dictator.
Europe needs war at this point to finish enslaving their population.
I once met a lady in the mid-70s in a club whose friend was Austrian. When the Austrian told me that she was Austrian I simply, jokingly said, “Oh, then you are communist.”
She went ballistic on me and shouted, “WE ARE NOT COMMUNIST! Then she really went off on me and even slapped me for saying such a vile thing. I wound up dating her because she was simply a blast to be around. ;-)
I know that this is off-topic but this thread reminded me of her. ;-)
She is lout. She has no diplomacy in her and she is incapable of doing anything except line her own pockets.
That she is threatening to go to war with Russia just as soon as the EU can equip and train an army speaks volumnes about what she has not learned.
She fails to recognize her Inner-Zelinski and how that turned out for Ukraine. Zelinski was preparing to launch a 500k offense in Donbas in Jan 22, when Russia took matters into their own hands and caught them off guard. Zelinski had the Army 4x the size of what Russia had facing him. To NATO and the EU it seemed like they could go right to Moscow.
She is going to get the EU nuked. Let the EU run its collective mouth about how they are building tanks and fighter jets to go fight Russia and force a return of the land in Ukraine... Russia will not let that MOUTHY THREAT materialize.
I have seen two publid operational plans that the US suspects Russia could use in a first strike in Europe. One is 40 bombs, probably conventional. The other strike package is 400 bombs and that is not conventional.
Furthermore, Russia has on the MOD planning table an 1,100 bomb strike package for Ukraine. My understanding is that is this Neutron bombs or radiation weapons that kill rather than blast infrastructure. Getting rid of the people or the troops would be a nasty walkup call for Ms. EU should she miscalculate and send boots on the ground to Ukraine.
