Cannes (France) (AFP) – Hollywood heavyweights Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Riz Ahmed and Guillermo del Toro have added their names to a letter condemning the film industry's silence on what it called "genocide" in Gaza, the organisers confirmed Friday.
The petition, signed by more than 370 actors and filmmakers, also denounced Israel's killing of Fatima Hassouna, the young Gaza photojournalist featured in the documentary "Put Your Soul in Your Hand and Walk", which premiered at the Cannes film festival Thursday.
The organisers of the letter said the French actor Juliette Binoche, who is chairing the jury at Cannes, also added her name to the letter, along with Rooney Mara, US indie director Jim Jarmusch and "Lupin" star Omar Sy.
"Schindler's List" star Ralph Fiennes as well as Richard Gere, Mark Ruffalo, Guy Pearce, Susan Sarandon, Javier Bardem, and directors David Cronenberg, Pedro Almodovar, Alfonso Cuaron, Mike Leigh said they were "ashamed" of their industry's failure to speak out about Israel's siege of Gaza in the original letter.
In her Cannes speech Tuesday Binoche also referenced the Israeli hostages taken by Palestinian group Hamas in its October 7, 2023 assault on Israel, which sparked the Gaza war.
"Sicko" and "Bowling for Columbine" director Michael Moore and French actor Camille Cottin of "Call My Agent" fame are among other entertainment industry figures who have added their names to the letter since Tuesday.

Do they just not know what that word means? Because if the Israelis wand to commit genocide against the Palestinians they’d all be gone by now. It’s getting somewhat tiresome, these “celebrities”.

If they want to call it a ‘Siege’, that’s fine. If they want to call it attempted ‘Ethnic Cleansing’, that’s fine. If they want to call it ‘Genocide’, then where have the mass killings taken place and where are the bodies?

I guess they think it’s okay that Hamas had hostages and slaughtered some of them, including children. The elites sure have a warped sense of what’s right and what’s wrong.
Note the many foreign names on the list. Many will have acquired U.S. citizenship legally over the years because they’ve mostly worked here, but they rarely live in the America we know. They live in the film industry bubble, which has been poisoned by left wing blacklists for decades. The blacklist is real, and most actors are constantly scrambling for their next gig. The bigger the studio, the more execs lurking in the background. Unless you are someone like Sydney Sweeney riding the boob express, all it takes is one activist gatekeeper to blackball someone.
It’s almost as bad as academia. I keep an eye out for the people who manage to keep their heads down, sort of like undercover conservative young academics trying to get tenured at Harvard, Stanford or Berkeley.

Works for me let them sign their letter, it will present me the information I need to determine what movies and programming I won’ waste my money or time on. They have the right to free speech and I have the power of the purse.
Seems like no time since Hollywood was run by Jews.
