NORTHEAST MIAMI-DADE, Florida (WSVN) — Rescue crews took a man to the hospital after he accidentally shot himself with his own firearm while inside the Walmart in Northeast Miami-Dade, officials said.

The gunshot startled shoppers at the large retailer located at 1425 NE 163rd Street, Saturday afternoon.

Witnesses said some people ducked for cover, while others asked what was happening.

When asked whether she was scared, a shopper said, “Yes.”

7News cameras captured Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies swarming the area.

“When we pulled up, there were so many lights, so many police cars,” said a customer named Penelope, “and then, when we went inside, the whole produce section was just like closed off, and they, like, told me to get out, so they’re, like, obviously expanding their search or whatever.”

Myra, another customer, said she was inside the store when she heard the shot.

“The guy dropped the gun, and then ‘boom,’” she said.

Myra said she ducked immediately after the shot rang out.

Paramedics with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue arrived and transported the patient to a nearby hospital. Officials said he is expected to be OK.

As for customers inside the store, they said they’re grateful, because the outcome could have been much worse.

“It’s not the weirdest thing to happen in a Walmart. It’s honestly kind of expected,” said Myra.

Glocks have a safety. Please stop spreading misinformation.

A trigger safety, a firing pin safety, and drop safety are not a safety that will prevent a negligent discharge. They require no action to change it from Safe to Fire.

Calling them "passive safeties" in the brochures is deceptive.

The only active safety for a Glock is off-the-weapon: a fully secure holster where one has to take an action (drawing the Glock) to change it from safe to fire.

Has the store not heard of not handing a customer a loaded gun. I worked for them while I was on terminal leave with the military and I was selling weapons at around 4 per day by myself. I never let a customer have a loaded weapon and mde it a point to open the chambers each time I pulled one from the rack to let a customer feel it. They always got the rifles and shotguns open chambered and I never let them touch them prior to my inspection. How hard is that?

You identify three safeties you deem inadequate after stating a Glock has no safety. Perhaps it would have been more educational for everyone had you made your second statemennt first, rather than your declarative Glocks have no safety misinformation one.
Let me make a declarative statement, negligent discharges are never the fault of the gun.

They can call any of them a safety but they're not a safety.

There is nothing preventing anyone from picking up a Glock and pulling the trigger to discharge it; not the drop safety, not the firing pin safety, not the trigger safety. Nothing.

...unless they installed an aftermarket safety:

“Probably had it in his waistband.”

Most likely answer. Seen a lot of guys drop them out of their waistband. Saw a guy shoot himself in the butt with a snub nose .38 that way once.

If he had shot himself in the crotch he might have gone home that way. Not a big loss I’m sure

Glock’s have a double safety requiring the trigger to actually be pulled back by one’s finger. Best home defense for the inexperienced woman of the house because it’s “point and click” and we ALL know it’s unlikely that the wife is going to think about taking off the safety in a clutch situation requiring a simple “point and click” to save her own life. Thems the simple facts of gun safety...can’t shoot when the safety is on and you don’t remember to take it off because STRESS!

Guns are made to fire when you pull the trigger.

How many safeties does a fire arm have to have to be safe.

If one over comes or doesn’t use the safety or safeties.

Then pulls the trigger the firearm will fire.

99 percent of revolvers have no safety pull the trigger on a double action and it well fire.

Drop a old style single action on the hammer and it might fire.

They were indestructible …

Working man’s Caddy.

Like it’s cousins, the Olds Delta 88… Pontiac Bonneville… even a moderately optioned-up Chevy Impala.

I miss those road kings… classy, at a reasonable price so the average Joe could have something nice to take his family out for a drive after busting his ass all week.

Those were better days. Glad I grew up back then.

No, we ALL don't underestimate our wives like that.

How many safeties does a fire arm have to have to be safe.

It's not the number, it's what's required of the user.

A revolver with an 10-pound double-action pull has been shown to be safe enough from negligent discharges as it requires active intent on the part of the shooter.

For a semi-automatic without a 10-pound pull, there needs to be something the shooter must engage to make a trigger pull fire or not be able to fire.

Who would claim that cocking the hammer on revolver and then putting it in the holster is safe? Yet that's what you're doing with a Glock.

Glocks are not cocked.

The striker has to be pulled back and release by the trigger.

On a revolver that is cocked the hammer is held in place by the sear that can be over come with a blow,

The Glock not so.

But then I preaching to the choir as you are all knowable about such things.
