POLK COUNTY, Fla. - A kayaker was attacked and killed by an alligator Tuesday afternoon at Lake Kissimmee State Park in Central Florida, according to authorities.

Authorities were alerted to the incident just before 4 p.m. when a witness reported an encounter with the reptile.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission released a statement that read, "Preliminary information indicates that a woman was canoeing when she encountered an alligator and went into the water. The woman was later recovered from the water and was declared deceased."

The most recent incident comes during peak alligator mating season, a period when the animals are typically more active and territorial.

I don’t know if it’s the case here, but alligators have been known to attack small boats as they can be very territorial....especially during mating season.

*** a woman was canoeing when she encountered an alligator and went into the water***

The article doesn’t say she “got out of her kayak” in the way you seem to be suggesting, I don’t think she got in the water voluntarily. I’m betting the alligator knocked her off balance and she fell in the water. It’s hard to say from the little the article says, but I’m thinking the alligator was being aggressive towards her.

It said she went into the water. not why or how
1. possibly fell off due to panic.
2. gator could have upset the kayak
3. could have watched one too many Tarzan movies.

I used to take my Waverunner to Lone Cabbage Fish camp and go south to lake Poinsett and lake Winder. the portion of the st johns connecting them would have easily 40-50 gators up on the bank during mating season. Once we stopped to check on a friends gas cans he had bungee corded behind him. About 3 gators entered the water and the largest came to check on us. a quick burst from a 160hp jet pump discouraged him. No way would I be on a kayak in the freshwater lakes from Sanford south.

Stupidity on display. These “outdoor” types have no knowledge of the outdoors. It is all virtue signaling. Hey, look at me in my north face jacket, I am kayaking with gators, walking with Alaskan moose, trying to pet a buffalo, selfie with a bear etc...

Alligators occur from southeast Oklahoma and east Texas on the western side of their range to North Carolina and Florida in the east. They prefer fresh water lakes and slow-moving rivers and their associated wetlands, but they also can be found in brackish water habitats.

“Never go kayaking where gators live.”

Unless armed, and then only MAYBE.

Like any other predator, if threatened, best to dispatch the animal and deal with any consequences later.

Kayaks are nothing more than a floating sushi bar for hungry crocs. Regardless if she got out voluntarily or not....she was still in the water.

Women, especially when menstruating, must be very careful when wilding. There are stories of male deer attacking such women, while wilding, during the rut.
