Dozens of witnesses reportedly looked on in horror as a U.S. tourist visiting Rome screamed in pain after impaling himself on a metal fence at the Colosseum.
The man โ a 47-year-old American citizen living in Taiwan โ was stabbed in the spine while attempting to climb over the historic monument's fence. He was possibly attempting to get a better view, according to Italian newspaper Il Messaggero.
Bystanders who saw the horrific event called for help as the tourist, stuck on the fence, screamed until he lost consciousness. Law enforcement and paramedics quickly arrived at the scene, but it took them more than 20 minutes to remove him from the fence, Il Messaggero reported.
Once freed, the tourist was immediately brought to the emergency room, where doctors performed surgery. The man's lower back wound was closed with more than 80 stitches, and he was hospitalized in serious condition, the outlet reported.

Thank you very much and God bless you.
People do stupid things when trying to get the best picture.
When I was at the Grand Canyon, on the Navajo reserve, and I saw a guy leaning over about 30 degrees trying to look like he was flying. My first though was, he’s dead if a gentle breeze happens at an inopportune moment.
The “do stupid things, win stupid prizes” meme comes to mind
Sounds to me that he has no one to blame but himself. Play stupid games receive unpleasant results. I do hope he recovers fully, and learns that what he did was unacceptable.
The fence worked as designed and installed.
Note to self: never attempt to climb over a protective fence. Be it a fence guarding a top secret defense facility, a fence with a sign "Warning! Attack dogs on premises!", or a fence shielding an historical artifact from the public. Fences are there for a reason.
Reminiscent of fate of the priest in “The Omen”
Worthy of consideration for the Darwin Award
I was in the upper deck at Fenway Park on Saturday.
Printed on the concrete front wall was DO NOT LEAN OVER WALLS TO CATCH FLY BALLS.
I was reminded of some fan recently that did that and fell into the outfield.
The fence did it’s job.
If it was 2000 years ago they would have fed him to the lions.
Maybe you’ll feel better if I tell you what I read about the movie production. They had trouble with the dogs in the graveyard scene, because they were more interested in goofing around and humping each other than snarling and acting vicious.
“”the tourist was immediately brought to the emergency room,””
Apparently the reporter was AT the emergency room - otherwise, “the tourist was TAKEN to the emergency room.”
Folks - there’s a reason we have two words for occasions such as this - BRING AND TAKE!
“American tourist reportedly impaled on Rome’s Colosseum fence as dozens watch in horror”
Getting impaled used to be an essential part of the Colosseum experience.
Went to the horse races in Galway, Ireland back in the 1980’s and remember seeing the rock walls with cemented beer glass at the top. I remember thinking of the lawsuits if someone were to do that in the US.
Is this one of those ‘point-and-laugh’ situations?
It’s hard to tell sometimes.
Fences are there for a reason. There are sometimes good reasons to get over, under or through a fence - taking a better picture is usually not one of those reasons. My sympathies for the dude who got impaled, but seriously?
