Russia reeling as £38m fighter jet shot down by Ukrainian sea drone in world first

An unmanned Ukrainian sea drone shot down a Russian SU-30 fighter jet near the port of Novorossiysk - home to the Kremlin's Black Sea Fleet. The downing of the £38 million jet was carried out by Group 13 on May 2, a special unit within Ukraine's military intelligence.

The sea drone was reported to be equipped with a R-73 air-to-air missile, which struck the jet in midair. The SU-30 crashed into the sea. Reports suggest that the crew were able to eject from the stricken jet and were later picked up by a civilian cargo ship.

In a statement confirming the plane's shooting down, Ukraine's military intelligence said: "This is the world's first destruction of a combat aircraft by a naval drone."

Ukraine has previously shot down two Russian Mi-8 helicopters using Magura V5 drones on December 31, 2024.

The Sukhoi Su-30 is a twin-engine, two-seat, all-weather, long-range, multirole fighter jet.

It's designed for air superiority, air-to-ground, and air-to-sea operations.

Key characteristics include powerful engines, a large payload capacity, and advanced avionics for air-to-air and air-to-ground combat.

Congratulations… looks like Russia has been given yet another reason to take all Ukrainian territory that is adjacent to the Black Sea. Just sayin’.

And it’s still not our war.

Oh, so it’s ‘ok’ for a poster to repetitively post different sources for the same ‘news’ event? aka ‘spam’???

News to me, and first time I’ve ever observed such an egregious act.

Using your comment as logic, it would be ok for a FReeper to post 6 or more different articles from different sources in a short period of time.

Alrighty, then. /s

I think the Russians can survive the loss of a single plane.

True!

Putin's Russia can easily survive the loss of a single aircraft.

The only problem is, Putin has lost a lot more than just a single aircraft.

He has, in fact, lost hundreds of fixed-wing aircraft, as well as hundreds of helicopters in combat with Ukraine.

Regards,

These drones are not America tech. They are Ukrainian tech. It would be nice if they would give us the tech. If they lose the war, Russia will have it.

But the Ukraine-Russian war is the first war where Drones have become, perhaps, the most important type of weapon in the war.

I hope the Pentagon is paying attention. We need more drones, LOTS more drones.

They may not be American, but they sure as hell are not Ukrainian - not even close.

They are. But actually the tech itself is not so remarkable. What is remarkable is that the Ukrainians are able to make FPV aerial drones extremely cheaply. It costs an American manufacturer $50,000 or $100,000 to make even the simplest drone. The Ukrainians can do it for $1000. This particular drone probably cost more than that because we’re talking about a naval drone here. But the key to success in the drone war is to make drones that get the job done, but cost very little.
