Poplar trees are some of the fastest-growing, most popular shade trees in America. They encompass some 35 species, not including a massive number of hybrids, and can be found in zones 3 through 9. One question many homeowners want to know is, are poplar roots invasive?
Poplar trees are invasive because they have an extensive, fast growing, and shallow root system (up to three times wider than the tree is tall) which can lift sidewalks, retaining walls, and clog pipes. Poplar roots send up suckers 100ft away from the base of the tree while spreading seeds rapidly.

Thank you very much and God bless you.
City uses them on the curb along my rode - have one right outside my house and i’m trimming back the suckers on the roots several times a year....I’d cut it down but I’m not allowed to....
Poison works.
make smooth cabin wall logs. silky smooth!
Not all threes are poplar to Zach
A plant is invasive because it is not native to a particular geographic area, not because it grows and spreads quickly. I believe they make pencils and chop sticks from poplar because it regrows quickly, and that makes it cheap to harvest.
Pound a couple copper nails into the trunk.

If you cut the tree and treat the inner bark with a very concentrated treatment of glyphosate, it will go into the roots and kill the roots.
Same treatment for tree of heaven.

I lived in Jerome, AZ for a while, and tree of heaven (called paradise tree around there) is everywhere. It destroyed a lot of older sidewalks and building foundations, especially while Jerome was a semi-ghost town in the 60s and 70s.
We had a rather tall poplar tree years ago. Six lightning strikes later we have a stump.
To kill a tree simply cur a inch deep continuous circle around the trunk. It will die. Then the county will have to cut it down.............
Girdle the trunk.
I have to say, we must have some common background because all of your obscure references smack right into my funny bone!
I planted a number when I had acreage. They’re still a poplar choice for such applications
Poplar trees send out roots to spread. They love your sewer lines.
I hate those trees! Terrible firewood.
But I don’t hate them as much as Ailanthus. The worst!
GREAT MINDS - !
I read yours after I wrote mine!!
Put thee loader on the stump of these trees... They come up nice!
