George Simion, the leader of the right-wing Union of Romanians (AUR) party, has emerged as the frontrunner in Romania’s upcoming presidential election, polling reveals.
Simion is projected to win the first round of voting on May 4 with approximately 29 percent of the vote, according to Politico’s Poll of Polls. This puts him ahead of his nearest rivals, former National Liberal Party leader Crin Antonescu at 22 percent and Bucharest Mayor Nicușor Dan at 20 percent.
Simion’s rise to prominence comes in the wake of the controversial decision to annul the results of the previous presidential election held in December. That election saw Călin Georgescu, another right-wing candidate, unexpectedly win the first round. However, Romanian authorities canceled the results, alleging election interference and Russian “aggressive” hybrid operations, Politico reported.
The 38-year-old Simion has positioned himself as a champion of democracy and the rule of law. The candidate told Politico in a recent interview that his campaign is a fight to “reinstate democracy, the people’s will, the rule of law and the constitutional order.”
He has also aligned himself with the U.S. MAGA movement, recently visiting Washington to meet with former Trump adviser Steve Bannon and author and activist Jack Posobeic.
“We are the natural allies of the Republican Party and we’re almost perfectly aligned ideologically with the MAGA movement,” Simion told POLITICO in a recent interview about his party.
My colleagues have submitted a draft law to prevent the Constitutional Court to annul elections without clear evidence. It’s imperative to harmonize national legislation with #VeniceCommission’ recommendations. 🇷🇴Fair & free elections! Stop abuses!#Democracy#Romania…
The AUR, founded in 2019, advocates for socially conservative policies and holds an irredentist view of strengthening Romania, according to Politico. This stance has raised concerns about potential territorial disputes with neighboring countries such as Ukraine and Moldova. Simion is currently banned from entering both nations due to having previously campaigned for the seizure of land they currently hold, the outlet reported.
Simion has called for an end to Romanian military aid to Ukraine. However, he told Politico that Romania should remain a member of NATO. He has also called for the country to remain in the European Union, albeit with a sole focus on economic cooperation, according to the outlet.
If victorious, Simion has pledged to give a prominent role to Georgescu, who has been blocked from running again. Simion suggested Georgescu could potentially serve as prime minister. “I think that’s the normal thing, for him to occupy the role he wants,” he told Politico.
The rise of Simion and the AUR has been fueled by long-standing concerns over corruption and the perceived weakness of Romania’s political establishment, according to the outlet. Critics, however, have raised concerns about Simion’s tactics and rhetoric. Mayor Dan has described the AUR leader as a “thug” who has “instigated violence in the public sphere” in response to Simion reportedly saying those who rejected Georgescu’s candidacy should be “flayed.”
I am sure the courts will still try to interfere.
You know it.
The 3 AM ballot dumps will take care of any any attempts by the peasants to deny the globalists their lust for power.

“Our Democracy” is at stake!
“Romania’s Donald Trump-Supporting Candidate Leads In Polls Ahead Of Presidential Election”
My understand is that Putin controls him. Otherwise, why would he put Romania’s interests ahead of Globalist interests?
(Zeeper ‘logic’ for you)
Ilie Năstase would be ideal. He’s 78.
It’s time to call Romania the 51st state.
I think you have to be very careful looking at any leader of a foreign country in terms of being “Trump supporting” or “anti-Trump.” Their politics is so much more complicated than that. Who knows what “Trump supporting” really means in Romania. Headlines like this ridiculously overly-simplify the Romanian election.
The EU has six ways from Sunday to knock off a conservative leader.
That optimism will help :)
Maybe this country’s people are willing to fight back...unlike some other countries.
Little doubt.
