US President Donald Trump wants to see a permanent ceasefire to bring the war in Ukraine to a complete stop, the White House said Monday in response to Russia's unilateral three-day pause.
"I understand Vladimir Putin this morning offered a temporary ceasefire. The (US) president has made it clear he wants to see a permanent ceasefire, first, to stop the killing, stop the bloodshed, and while he remains optimistic he can strike a deal, he's also being realistic as well," spokesperson Karoline Leavitt told reporters.
"Both leaders need to come to the table to negotiate their way out of this. And I do think that the president meeting with President Zelensky shows that he is exuding a lot of effort and time into this because he wants to be a peacemaker president," she said, referring to Trump's meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of Pope Francis' funeral over the weekend.

We’ve disagreed, however, could agree with you given
Russia retains the land held now, and no NATO for Ukraine.
As for the latter, one way to GUARANTEE that is to get out of NATO, to go along with the Paris Accords, WHO, UN.
The US out of NATO effectively eliminates NATO.
The ball is in their court.
Russia makes another outreach for peace. And what does Zelensky do?
Demand the US send peacekeeping forces to Ukraine.
I swear.... Sometimes I think Trump ought to send arms and support (no troops) to Russia to speed up an end to this war.
Putin,
is pretty sure he can wear down the Ukrainians all the way.
Like most all past Russian dictators Putin could care less about his loss of soldiers. Russian women are happy to make more!
Not today Putin! The Demographics aren’t working for you as they did for Stalin.
You are getting into your seed stock to feed your paranoia and power thirst.
and no NATO for Ukraine.
The problem is Minsk II, which is now admitted to have been a deliberate lie to buy time and build up the Uke army to attack the Donbass in a final invasion.
On any given morning, nothing will stop NATO from coming out at 1000, and announcing that “as of 0800 this morning, Ukraine was accepted into NATO”.
1) Send US troops to fight for Ukraine.
2) Send billions more to the current government of Ukraine.
3) Send billions more AND send US troops to fight for Ukraine.
4) Declare this President Trump's war to win or lose, while forgetting Joe Biden.
4) Yawn, and let the UK's Starmer and France's Macron lead.
France, U.K. lead charge to keep Europe united behind Ukraine as British leader says Russia "playing games" CBS News, 27 March 2025My choice: Starmer and Macron. What's Marcus' choice?
I have a cunning plan:
Admit BOTH the Ukraine AND Russia into NATO.
Putin lamented to Tucker Carlson that, after the collapse of the USSR, the Russian expectation was that they would be invited to join the Table of Nations, but were shunned, instead.
So, now, call that bluff: invite Russia into NATO.
And put Ukraine in the mix, too.
BOTH probationary, on condition of forward motion resolving all lingering butthurt.
The Union and The Confederacy sorted out division every bit as powerful as what divides Russia and Ukraine; put them into the same sandbox with all their European neighbors where they have to play nice with the US continuing to oversee the whole cauldron from across The Pond.
o - Including Russia would extend NATO across the entirety of the Asian continent.
o - Including Russia would swing the compass needle of international alignments in a massively favorable direction, for BOTH them AND the United States.
o - NATO Member states in The Eruozone would be bookended with two dominant powers coming together to shepherd the entire lot from opposite ends.
o - NATO Membership would invite better trade relations all the way around, giving leverage for favorable agreements among the currently-fractious assemblage.
o - A NATO extending around the entire northern hemisphere would create a distinctly inevitable sense of the direction of global trade and economics, sending a “get with the program” international overture to China.
o - This massive realignment into a strong and united front would go a very long way toward snuffing the militarism that’s been brewing in Beijing, making it obvious that choosing to be a better partner in equitable global trade is the most advantageous avenue.
Its all posturing.
Russia has had four consistent conditions for ending their “SMO.” Not one is being met.
Are the Russians losing? Do they not “have the cards?”
If not, then why would they agree to any of this?
Nothing says outreach for peace like invading another country, stealing their land, and bombing their cities. If Putin really wants peace he could just send his forces home.
Not true! Merkel said that allowing Ukraine to build up its forces was the result of Minsk II, not the purpose. And why should Ukraine not seek to reestablish control over its sovereign territory? And why should Russia object to that?
Ukraine had the lowest birth-rate in Europe for 30 years before 2022. The EU estimates Ukraine also lost 300-400K each year to emigration after 1991
Its population has declined from 52mm in 1989, to 48mm in 2001. Then in 2014 it lost Crimea, the Donbas, and had 8-10 million leave (to both West and East) since late 2021. And how many have been killed since?
but PLEASE, tell us more about how Russia will be defeated because its losing population.
Are you a bot?
I believe I stated Putin will prevail.
But only in the short term.
I was musing on the longer term effects his actions will have on his version of Russia.
My issue with your plan is with knowledge that behind the curtains of Ukraine, are 35-40 (Nuland gave us a number) biolabs, deep(state) ties to the CIA.
Thus, any movement vis-a-vis NATO should be ultimately towards its elimination.
If your plan embraces NATO to destroy it, then I’m all for it.
“Federal Judge in San Fransicko orders resumption of hostilities”
You can do your own calculations.
The addition of Crimea and the other 4 (5?) Oblasts is about 5.5% population increase for Russia. Typical growth rates for countries (usually relying on immigration) will be < 1%/yr.
5.5% is a pretty solid decade of pop growth.
The Russians tried a temporary fix with the Minsk Accords, only to see Ukraine renege, rebuild its military and start attacking Donetsk and Lugansk.
It's time for Trump to walk away if Zelensky won't sign a rare earths deal by the end of the month.
Preposterous: the "unconditional ceasefire" Russia offers is actually conditioned on Ukraine capitulating to all of Russia's demands including a shrunken army and reinstituting internal elections in such a way as to be manipulated by Russia again.
