People who eat lots of ultra-processed foods (UPF) may be at greater risk of dying early, a study in eight countries including the UK and the US suggests.
Processed meats, biscuits, fizzy drinks, ice cream and some breakfast cereals are examples of UPF, which are becoming increasingly common in diets worldwide.
UPFs tend to contain more than five ingredients, which are not usually found in home cooking, such as additives, sweeteners and chemicals to improve the food's texture or appearance.
Some experts say it's not known why UPFs are linked to poor health - there is little evidence it's down to the processing itself and could be because these foods contain high levels of fat, salt and sugar.
The researchers behind the study, published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, looked at previous research to estimate the impact of ultra-processed food intake on mortality.

My personal definition is to read the ingredients; If there are any I cannot pronounce…those tend to be ultra processed.
Was there a control group?
Double blind protocol?
Repeatability?

What if people who eat crap food also don’t exercise, and it’s the lack of exercise that is killing them?

I’ve never eaten arugula, but my guess is that most people who do watch their health, go to doctors and dentists, exercise, watch their weight, and have better than average incomes, drive safer cars, and read more than average, and eat more fresh fish than the average.

Its BBC... a “biscuit” is the UK word for cookie, just like a potato chip is called a “crisp”.
I saw UK mentioned. They call cookies biscuits. Maybe that’s was they meant.
I think the funny part of all of this handwringing is that if you are older than 12 it is pretty likely you know what is good for you and what isn’t.
My wife and I have made all of our food from scratch (except bread) since I retired. If I make cookies, you can be satisfied with 2 of them…not like a sleeve of Oreos. She makes tomato sauce and we cook every meal from ingredients.
We have the time, money, and experience to do this. I can understand why my daughter who has two small children, a full time job, and a deployed husband cannot always do this. But even then, her kids snack on fruit not candy.
I don’t know if this is all an intelligence thing or a laziness thing. But I walk behind people in the grocery store and I cannot believe the crap they are buying.

These idiots presume to disentangle the single variable of processed food. Stupid.
It is not taught at school and it is not taught in the home and heaven knows it is not taught on any of the media that they consume.
What shocked me was how many of them are kids from nice middle class homes. They grew up with fancy kitchens that were used to heat up take out. Some do not know how to use a coffee maker and I am not talking one of the fancy espresso machines that cost several thousand dollars. I am talking about your basic drip coffee maker.
Parents are not teaching their children the basics. I had to add a class on stocking your medicine cabinet and basic first aid because the idea of keeping burn cream and eye wash on hand never occurred to them. They did know about band-aides but not much beyond that.
We need them all alive and voting for as long as possible.
Once they die they are likely to switch to voting for democrats forever.

This ultra-processed BS term is driving me nuts! People on FR are so weird about concepts like moderation. The low carb evangelists are the worst! I eat a huge variety of food, mainly concentrated on balanced macronutrients. Many things I eat are processed - but I bet I could use my standard line on all of these posters when I get in a discussion in person about food with some food weirdo…”look at me, look at you.” Shuts them right up 95% of the time.
But quite frankly, I’m starting to slack off the cultivation. It IS a good bit of work.
It’s getting to be a bit much for me. I’m no longer a spring chicken.
