Ultra-processed foods may be linked to early DEATH

People who eat lots of ultra-processed foods (UPF) may be at greater risk of dying early, a study in eight countries including the UK and the US suggests.
Processed meats, biscuits, fizzy drinks, ice cream and some breakfast cereals are examples of UPF, which are becoming increasingly common in diets worldwide.
UPFs tend to contain more than five ingredients, which are not usually found in home cooking, such as additives, sweeteners and chemicals to improve the food's texture or appearance.
Some experts say it's not known why UPFs are linked to poor health - there is little evidence it's down to the processing itself and could be because these foods contain high levels of fat, salt and sugar.
The researchers behind the study, published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, looked at previous research to estimate the impact of ultra-processed food intake on mortality.

I wonder if one of these “Big Food” companies will get on the bandwagon and announce a major ad campaign about changing their products to be all natural and healthy.
You see things like cereal having labels of heart healthy, etc., why not an entire food product lineup that is natural and full of real things that make people healthy.

could be because these foods contain high levels of fat, salt and sugar. The truth: Remove the sugar, and eat all the salt and fat to your desires.

why not an entire food product lineup that is natural and full of real things that make people healthy. That already exists. It's called "Shop the perimeter", skip ALL the aisles in-between.

Re the named foods. Like many things, moderation. Sodas. Ice cream. Spam, deviled ham, vienna sausage. Consume them rarely.
First I've heard of biscuits as ultra processed food. I'll eat bake-at-home biscuits (from the little cardboard roll) maybe twice a month. But I think the author is referring to something else?

That already exists. It's called "Shop the perimeter", skip ALL the aisles in-between. You do that and you can not buy spices, the majority of fruits and vegetables, rice, flour or coffee.
But you will buy a great deal of processed meats, breads, cakes and ice cream.
It is one of those slogans that sound good if you do not actually shop but is stupid in practice.

I understand all that, but what about Kellog, Post or Nabisco, one of the really big food companies.
You can shop at Whole Foods and go all natural, if 1-2 of the major food companies goes all natural for a competitive price, then ultra processed foods will be in the minority unlike today where nearly everything is ultra-processed.

Being fat and sedentary will kill you sooner than processed foods will.
Get off your ass, plug in your iPod and MOVE. Walk. Get going. Do something.

Processed meats, biscuits, fizzy drinks, ice cream and some breakfast cereals are examples Did we really need a study to tell us that eating ice cream and junk food may lead to an early death? Also, gotta love the clickbait headline.

Eggsactly. The real culprit of all so-called chronic diseases (diabete 2, obesity, hypertension...) is carbs.
The food industry and big pharma will never tell people that truth to keep them addicted to carbs.
First, it’s the saturated fat. Then it’s salt. Then it’s bad fat versus good fat. Then it’s lack of fibers or exercise. The lastest culprits are food dyes and ultra processed food. Each time, the hysteria get silly and sillier and people get fatter and sicker.

It’s the BBC, so “biscuits” probably means “cookies.”

___________^__^^
It’s BBC, so the English call cookies biscuits.
I either make from scratch or buy the frozen kind.
