OTTAWA — President Donald Trump has an Election Day message for Canadians: The Canada-U.S. border is artificial, and you should become the 51st state.
“Good luck to the Great people of Canada,” Trump said on Truth Social at 8:36 a.m. ET on Monday as polls in parts of the country were opening, landing on the morning of one of the most consequential elections in decades.
“No more artificially drawn line from many years ago. Look how beautiful this land mass would be,” he said.
It was not actually clear which Canadian leader Trump was favoring with his latest post.
The Liberals under Mark Carney hold a single-digit poll lead over the Conservatives, led by Pierre Poilievre, after a hard-fought, five-week campaign. They clashed over who was best suited to protect Canada from Trump’s economic threats of punitive tariffs and annexation taunts.
Poilievre has argued that when Trump talks about the 51st state, he is trying to prop up Carney so the president can face what Conservatives say will be a weak Liberal government going forward.
Carney has argued that only he has the mettle to confront Trump — pointing to crisis-management experience on his resume from helping to steer Canada through the 2008 recession as its central bank governor to managing the fallout of Brexit as the U.K.’s central banker.
More than 7 million Canadians voted in advance polls ahead of Election Day.
Carney and Trump spoke March 28 in a call during which the prime minister initially said the president has respected Canadian sovereignty. Canadians appeared to be enjoying a reprieve from Trump’s anti-Canadian bluster, until Carney clarified last week that the president did in fact raise the 51st state during the call.
Carney dismissed questions about why he’d failed to mention that in his original readout, arguing that Trump was just being Trump, and that the tone was generally positive.
Trump’s Monday morning post shredded any illusions that Trump was cutting Canada any slack.
“Elect the man who has the strength and wisdom to cut your taxes in half, increase your military power, for free, to the highest level in the World, have your Car, Steel, Aluminum, Lumber, Energy, and all other businesses, QUADRUPLE in size, WITH ZERO TARIFFS OR TAXES, if Canada becomes the cherished 51st. State of the United States of America,” Trump wrote Monday.
Trump’s pick for ambassador, Michigan Republican Pete Hoekstra, arrives in Ottawa on Tuesday — stepping into a post already overshadowed by his boss’ online bombshell.
On the heels of Trump’s intervention, his new ambassador to Canada, the veteran Michigan lawmaker Pete Hoekstra, will arrive in Ottawa on Tuesday.

Thank you very much and God bless you.
We will see CHINESE military bases in Canadian territory thanks to this “trolling”.
Bring in just Alberta. The rest of Canada turns left more often than a NASCAR driver.
He never said that. What he said was is that our tie to Canada and our relationship with Canada is as if they are one of us...like a 51st state. He was referring to the long history of friendly relations with Canada...not anything approaching an annexation of Canada.
I don’t know for sure whether President Trump is joking, trolling, being serious, or simply trying, as Poilievre says, to push Carney over the finish line.
Stirring the pot has negative connotations today. But the original literal act has much application for trump.
Not everyone can stir like he does................
Never forget that the Canadians came and burned down The White House.
You can give it up now. Canada is mostly leftists. Neither of the candidates that are leading are conservative or populist.
If Canadians want to vote for what is the worst for them, then that is on them, not Trump.
Trump once again reverting to his legendary lack of self-discipline, thereby ensuring the defeat of the conservatives candidate who has been working tirelessly to save Canada from the authoritarian left.
Twisting Canadian liberals ta iles is not a good idea on election day.
And watch, we’ll have a very good idea of who the next prime minister is going to be tonight. None of this bullcrap None of this bullcrap of how it might take a week or 2 to count everything.
“ thanks to this “trolling”.
I don’t know why they used the word ‘trolling’.
It appears to be a genuine heartfelt statement.
We may see Chinese bases in Canada in the near
future but, it will be because Canada is only our
friend when they are getting something from us.
“The closer you get to Canada, the more things there are that eat horses.”

A narrow majority for the Conservatives may lead to a roll back of enough Liberal policies to keep Canada intact -- for the time being, at least.
Trump is not helping at all here. Does he want a Liberal government? Because ever time he “trolls” about Canada, he’s increasing support for a Liberal government that has been a disaster for Canada. It makes no sense for Trump to want Carney, who hates Trump and everything he stands for, to win.
Trump really screwed this up for Canada. Carney is another Commie.
Saskatchewan is pretty conservative too.
Trump is not helping at all here.
“A house divided against itself, cannot stand.”
I believe this government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free.
I do not expect the Union to be dissolved – I do not expect the house to fall – but I do expect it will cease to be divided.
It will become all one thing or all the other.
“A nation devidied cannot stand
It’s clear to me what Trump is doing...
He was horrified by what has happened to Canada under Trudeau, gaslighting the nation into acceptance of woke socialism.
So in true Art of the Deal fashion, his first “offer” is that Canada become our 51st state, since they seem to have lost their national identity anyhow.
And look what happened: an immediate surge of Canadian nationalism emerged! Sort of a Make Canada Great Again movement, inspired by Trump rather than some internal political leader, but stay tuned...
Making Canada a state is the last thing we want or need, but the threat served a valuable purpose - we’re much better off with a vigorously-Canadian Canada on our northern border than we would be if Canada continued its slide into becoming Europe-North.
Trump really screwed this up for Canada. Carney is another Commie.
Trump has said nothing about Canada for over a month - and then drops this on Election Day. Seems very much planned.
Canada’s conservatives are indeed the Mitt Romney GOP of Canada, but not sure why Trump wants Carney to win.
Pierre Poilievre is the Canadian version of Jeb Bush. It’s no great loss to the U.S. if he loses. In fact, it seems like Canada’s conservative governments end up in power at times when the U.S. economy is in the crapper.
