ATTENTION: INVASIVE MOSQUITOES DETECTED IN A PART OF SOUTH SAN JOSE
Update:
Invasive Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, first detected in the county in large numbers last year, have been found again this year in a neighborhood where they were detected last year. This reappearance means the mosquito’s eggs successfully survived the winter and are hatching now that the weather is getting warmer.
This mosquito is an aggressive daytime biter and can spread diseases like dengue and Zika. These diseases aren’t in the county right now, but finding this mosquito again is a serious health concern because it means the mosquito is successfully surviving and reproducing in our community, increasing the risk of these diseases.
Detection Area:
The invasive mosquitoes were found in a neighborhood in South San José, near Cypress Point Court and Fairway Glen Lane.
What We Are Doing:
We are responding to the invasive mosquito findings by:
- Setting more traps to monitor the number of mosquitoes present.
- Going door-to-door to inspect yards to find mosquito larvae in standing water.
- Using targeted larvicides to stop mosquito larvae from reaching the flying and biting adult stage.
- Notifying affected community members through email alerts, AlertSCC, and Nextdoor.
Based on our findings, mosquito control measures may take place in affected neighborhoods. This can include multiple larvicide treatments using different methods that can include, but are not limited to, backpack spraying and truck-mounted equipment.
How You Can Help:
You play an important role in controlling the spread of this mosquito. You can help by doing the following:
- Let our licensed technicians access your property to do the important job of checking for mosquitoes and controlling them as needed.
- Privacy Concern: If you are worried about privacy, please know our staff are only allowed to set traps, check for mosquitoes, and control mosquitoes that are found. They are not allowed to do anything else on the property. Our staff will have clear ways to identify themselves as district employees.
- Report day-biting mosquitoes immediately by calling us at (408) 918-4770, emailing vectorinfo@cep.sccgov.org, or submitting a report online at vector.santaclaracounty.gov/ReportMosquitoes. (You can send photographs of dead or live mosquitoes with black and white stripes to the same email address.)
- Dump out any containers that are filled with water and clean them by scrubbing them with hot, soapy water or a diluted bleach solution. Instructions on how to properly clean out containers to remove Aedes mosquitoes can be found at vector.santaclaracounty.gov.
Stay Informed:
Subscribe to the County's emergency alert system, AlertSCC, to receive specific neighborhood notifications about invasive mosquito detections and mosquito treatments happening in your community.

Should I wear a mask?
I received this email this afternoon. Can helicopter spraying be far behind?

I heard that these mosquitoes tend to feed within a couple of feet of the ground, so wear long pants and use a DEET-containing insect repellent.
They showed up in the Tucson area at least 25 years ago, but I hardly ever see any.

Report “day biting mosquitos?”
I experienced morning biting mosqitos in Canada...and their bite was painful...and this was 25 years ago.

Ya. Im outside the supposed zone of these things and I dont remember a time that mosquitos didnt bite in the day. I mean, not so much on short grass away from vegetation in direct sun obviously but if you headed into the shade of a forested bog for fishing and wildcrafting they would show up right along with the deer flies.

Nope, won’t happen. They will let the pests run wild before they spray. How long would the permits be held up before being denied in California.

LOL...so you lived through it, too? I remember the whole house shaking with that squadron of copters overhead at treetop level at night.

...can spread diseases like dengue and Zika. Yes, but they have to bite something that has the disease. They don't produce it.
So, if the disease is not already there, there's nothing to spread.
