A serious car crash occurs every 7 minutes on Long Island — and NY rep is demanding action: ‘National crisis’

Long Island Rep. Laura Gillen is urging the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee to hold an emergency hearing on the nationwide “surge” in deadly traffic accidents — after an unsettling investigation revealed that a serious car crash occurs every seven minutes on Long Island.

“The failure to secure our roads has led to thousands of lives being cut short, families being ripped apart, and a terrible void being left in too many communities,” Gillen wrote in her letter compelling the committee to take action.

The Democratic lawmaker’s campaign comes after an investigation by Newsday revealed that Long Island drivers get into a serious accident every seven minutes — killing more than 2,100 people and injuring 16,000 others on the roads between 2014 and 2023.

Sounds like a Longisland crisis not a national crisis.

Based in n what I see distracted drivers are behind an immense number of crashes. What is likely raising the number is the number of cars often involved in “one “ incident. It is common now to see three four and five cars totaled in a chain reaction.

Lack of enforcement.

And not just downstate.

No fault is also to blame.

Is this a matter for the federal government to address? Or to look at another way, what sort of law could be passed that would reduce car accidents?

The laws are already on the books. Don't allow illegal alien invaders into the country, and when you catch them, deport them.

For legal aliens, require proof of real driving skill before letting them into the country and they become a state problem. A DUI by a legal alien should result in deportation. Go crash into people in your own country.

We have a low overpass that gets hit 3 or more times a year despite a GIANT sign and various blinking warning lights saying maximum height 11 1/2 feet. They can't read.

We have one in Idaho Falls that gets hit about twice per month.

My wife and I were traveling down a road inside Yellowstone National Park. The vehicle ahead was going about half the posted speed. My wife got annoyed and passed him. We turned into a parking area. The slow poke showed up soon after. As he exited his vehicle, he said in a thick German accent, "this is not the autobahn". I replied, "That is correct. The posted speed is in MILES PER HOUR, not KILOMETERS". That explained driving at half the posted speed. The posted speed was 45 MPH.

If the accidents are due to the roads themselves, the first step is to identify who has been in charge of designing/building/maintaining them. Is the problem incompetence or thievery? Get rid of the guilty — so long as the current screw-ups remain, there will be no fixing the situation.

My guess is that this is really all about grifting up more funds for union contractors/workers in the district.

Correct, the NIMBY attitudes definitely hinder progress with much needed infrastructure.

Even though it's 2025, I still have many areas around my home without cell coverage because the affluent residents don't want to have cell towers constructed in their precious neighborhoods. Not even inside of church steeples (which I think is a great idea as it brings money to the churches).

I used to take the ferry out of Bridgeport for my Long Island trips (Port Jefferson on the other side) but that city is such a dangerous and nasty area I'd rather just leave an hour earlier and go over the Whitestone or Throgs Neck, which necessitates going through Bronx and Queens.

Since LIRR went to Grand Central, I can now take my Metro North to the city to catch the LIRR out to my office there. But that also requires getting up an hour or so earlier.

We need a bridge/tunnel, like they have going over the Chesapeake to connect with Virginia Beach.

Speeding, yes.

Crappy roads, no.

“Speeding and driving under the influence have been the largest share of fatalities going way back, but the numbers have really grown in this post-pandemic perio d,” Doulis said.

According to the report, Suffolk County had more fatal crashes involving a distracted driver, speeding, and DWI than any other county in the state. However, there is another major risk factor that experts are seeing.

A spokesperson for AAA tells Team 12 Investigates that they are seeing an alarming increase in crashes caused by unsafe lane changing.

“I think that has to do with a lot of the aggressive driving we’re seeing out there,” said Alec Slatky, managing director of Public and Government Affairs for AAA. “People weaving in and out of lanes, tailgating, so that’s why it’s really important to pay attention to threats that might even be coming from behind you.”

The state comptroller’s report also found more people died in crashes on Long Island because they were not wearing a seatbelt or helmet”

Traffic fatalities have dropped over the decades despite a growing population and more miles driven. How much anyone want to bet that letting politicians like this lady start blathering about reducing fatalities and funding programs and the result will be an uptick in deaths instead?

The NIMBYs killed the Rye-Oyster Bay Bridge decades ago. That’s why the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expwy. dead ends at Jericho Turnpike. They built on the old ROW to make sure it would never happen. They’ll never build a bridge to CT.
