Another pro-Palestinian Columbia University student and U.S. green card holder was detained by federal agents as he arrived for a citizenship appointment Monday.
Mohsen Mahdawi, a permanent resident in the U.S. for 10 years, was one of the leading voices of protests on the New York City campus in the early months of the Israel-Hamas conflict.
He was detained in Colchester, Vermont, by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), triggering the process of removal – the latest in a string of targeted enforcement efforts against pro-Palestinian activist students.
Newsweek reached out to the Department for Homeland Security (DHS) for comment via email Monday afternoon.
Why It Matters
Mahdawi is said to be friends with Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia graduate with a Green Card who also helped to lead pro-Palestinian activities on campus last year. Khalil's arrest on March 8 and subsequent court case has been met with fierce opposition, as he was never charged with any crime. An immigration judge eventually declared him deportable on Friday.
What To Know
Mahdawi was born in the West Bank, per a court filing, and arrived in the U.S. in 2014. While attending Columbia, he co-founded the Palestinian Student Union in October 2023, alongside Khalil.
