Arizona recreation area closed after hiker death and nearly 3 dozen rescues in just 2 days (only 5.78 years left)

Arizona Hot Springs and Goldstrike Trails announced they have closed multiple trails in Arizona’s Lake Mead National Recreation Area following the death of one hiker and the rescue of 33 others over the course of two days.

The social media post says the closure occurred due to dangerously high temperatures and multiple heat-related search and rescue incidents.

They say the canyons are expected to exceed 100°F, and many hikers are not "adequately prepared for these extreme conditions."

"With the season’s heat just beginning, most people are not yet acclimated, increasing the likelihood of heat illness," they said. "Yesterday, a hiker died on the Arizona Hot Springs Trail in what is suspected to be a heat-related incident. Five other members of the same group were also experiencing heat distress and required helicopter evacuation."

At the time of the post, rangers were actively responding to a large-scale rescue involving 28 hikers, three adults and 25 children with special needs.

Allegedly, the group attempted to reach Arizona Hot Springs without adequate preparation.

“Who in the hell takes 25 kids with special needs hiking in ARIZONA in these temperatures????”

Yes, and with only 3 adults to supervise them? We don’t know what kind of special needs these kids may have, but that sounds like an inadequate ratio to me.

File under: People are stupid.

The article mentions a rebuttal letter from the school admin who said only three of the children were special needs. But even so, why take a bunch of kids, special needs or not, out in those conditions!!!

I recall having to have a “permission slip” signed by my parents in order to partake in a field trip during school hours.

Did these “professional child wranglers “ bother to inform the parents of their desert trek excursion ? Were the risks and hazards of such an adventure explained in advance ?

Sure ,take my disabled ( or whatever ), child out in the desert , led by neon haired lesbian cat women, I’m sure good times while follow.

Those adults should be beaten, disgraced and jailed for their ignorance.

“I almost bet, that the dead hiker was a German tourist.”

Yep, over the years I have had to call emergency services for at least a dozen at my business. The worst situation they put themselves into is they like to ride motorcycles or bicycles across the country. But they come at the wrong time of the year and commit suicide in the summer heat. They must think we are too stupid to know what we are talking about when we warn them about the heat. They have a serious “arrogance” problem...

The park has a hiker problem.

Permits must be issued to hike the trails after the hikers produce evidence of adequate clothing water, and shoes. Those lacking the proper attire and equipment must be denied access to the trails.

Yes, and they feel so fit!

In AZ dry heat, you have to force yourself to drink, even if you do not feel that thirsty. They do not understand that!

Oh yeah... More big government Nanny state micromanagement imposed just because of a couple dummies.

They are primitive trails with no facilities, the access is just a wide spot on the highway shoulder. They will just close it permanently rather than build a facility and pay a ranger to stand there and check everyone. So everyone will lose out even the locals who have no problem at all with these conditions.

That is the cure, take it away from everyone so no one gets to enjoy it. How about just “use at your own risk” warnings?

I have spent more that half my life in deserts (73 now).

The desert will kill you with a smile on its face.

If it wasn’t for that darn climate change the desert would be rolling hills of grass, trees, birds, and the occasional unicorn sipping a cool drink from a freshwater stream, pausing momentarily to fart skittles in a colorful array of springtime pastels.

That is a fact. And not enough salt/electrolytes in their systems. But I think most of it is because they are used to the much cooler climate in Germany. You can see them coming from a couple hundred yards down the road because their faces are so bright red “flushed” from the heat.

Germans turn from white to bright red when they hit the desert in the summer... And it is not sunburn, it is heat exhaustion about to kill them... I have even had them drive in with cars, get out, turn red, and hit the ground just two minutes later. The heat hits them like a club and puts them out.

Anyone who sets out for a hike in the Arizona desert when temps are over 100 needs his head examined.

When we were hiking in Hawaii, we were told if we needed rescue it would cost us a minimum of $800+ dollars.

Not a few minutes later, we saw a helicopter fly over to rescue stranded hikers (was in the paper the next day).

“When we were hiking in Hawaii, we were told if we needed rescue it would cost us a minimum of $800+ dollars.”

They do the same in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area where these trials are located. Because they have to call 3rd party private flight for life helicopters to come pick them up. You will be charged by the 3rd party responding.

“Anyone who sets out for a hike in the Arizona desert when temps are over 100 needs his head examined.”

Locals have no problem with it at all, for most of us 95 to 100 degrees is a cooler summer day. Pavers are paving, roofers are roofing, bicyclists are bicycling, ballgames are played... It is “normal” for us.

Shouldn’t judge others by your own weaknesses.

Society needs to stop saving nitwits from themselves. This eventually adds to the number of nitwits. Let people earn their own Darwin Award.

I absolutely agree. Feminists have indirectly bubble wrapped our whole culture and society. If you never climb a tree and fall out you will never learn how to NOT fall out of trees...

I live in the Los Angeles area where temps of 100+ are common. My family is from the Central Valley where temps of 110 are not uncommon for long stretches of time, so I am very well aware of the dangers of high heat.

We are warned constantly not to "engage in strenuous" activities during those times, I consider hiking to be one of those activities.

Choosing to engage in such activities during high heat is not a "weakness" it is sensible - and may save your life - and why we, a family of avid hikers, choose to do that particular activity during the winter months.

And yes, people, of course, do work outdoors during high heat - I see it all the time, they are used to it. But to suggest not hiking in high heat is a weakness...

Well, that is just SILLY.
