Agun discharged Thursday inside the backpack of a 9-year-old in Maryland while the student was in school, following a similar incident days earlier in Virginia.
The incident occurred in southern Maryland, at Billingsley Elementary School, according to a Washington NBC News affiliate.

A school resource officer and teacher said they recovered the gun right after it went off.
The Charles County Sheriff's Office is investigating the situation.
Three days earlier, a handgun went off in a third-grader's backpack at a school in Virginia.

Another magic gun! Probably the Amish again.
Must have been for show-and-tell.
The sound of another NGO-NFP Executive Director of some “End the Violence” organization getting his next pair of wings.
These families must be held responsible ,for teaching their 9 year olds gun safety .
Was it a Sig P320? Those have had problems.
From the picture it’s identified as a Kimber. Looks like a .357 Magnum. But I question how/why this weapon just “accidentally” fired.
Don’t know, but that revolver pic is from the article. I don’t know if it is the actual weapon or just a stock photo, but one cartridge has been fired.............
I would guess the weapon was cocked. Although it’s hard to think how the trigger could be pulled, or the discharge happened.
Loved the Sig 226. One of the only handguns I know that balances for firing vs. holding. Rounds go where the weapon is pointed.
I mentioned this to a relative from the area who didn’t even flinch. I said aren’t you shocked? She said “ not in that area”.

From a local tv station , Gun goes off in elementary school classroom in Charles County
Not an expert, but I find it improbable that the gun “went off” without Junior having pulled the trigger..
You do realize, that the trigger pressure needed to discharge a sa pistol is 4-5 lbs or less right? and can be as low as 2-3lbs.
A loaded pistol in a backpack, easily could be set off by something shifting in the backpack if it bumped the trigger.
Media don’t use real photos. They use stock pictures to convey emotion. Police car lights, police crime scene tape, pictures of guns or knives. It’s much easier than sending Jimmy Olsen or Peter Parker to get pictures. Web pages are much less demanding than mass circulation newspapers.

Only thing I can think of is the kid was reaching into his backpack and just grabbed the first thing. As you suggest, the hammer was likely cocked and the safety off. If the kid new anything about guns, then it seems he was ready for action.
And people wonder why metal detector are needed in schools.
Husband was a high school dean - said a kid entered his office and said another kid had a gun in his backpack and was showing it around.
My husband knew the kid was telling the truth and immediately called the police - who found the gun. School covered it all up and it was never mentioned again...
Happens all the time. Just ask Alec Baldwin.
