This happened in public, so there should be a lot of witnesses to evaluate the “self-defense” claim. From what we know about the victim, he does not sound like someone who would get violent over a misunderstanding about where someone was supposed to be sitting, and him being violent would be the only rationale for him being fatally stabbed.

I read the article and got some context. Apparently, the attacker was inside the tent of the victim's track team, a place he presumably had no business being in. The victim asked him to leave, and when he didn't, the victim grabbed him and tried to remove him from the tent. Then, the accused pulled out his knife and stabbed the victim.

The perp is claiming that when the victim tried to remove him from the tent, this justified fatal violence in response. If he was indeed in a place he had no business being in, HE started it even if the victim was the first to make physical contact.

As a general rule, blacks are allowed to be defiant of the social norms expected in a high trust society and if you try to stand up for yourself ("This is my seat, not your seat.") then they are allowed to stab you and make a claim of self-defense.

This case will not be as cut and dry as initially expected. The accused's lawyers will fight hard for a self-defense claim and argue that once Metcalf put hands on him, even if it was to enforce the social norms expected in a high trust society, it became self defense.

I don't see it this way at all. Hopefully a jury doesn't either but it's the wealthy 'burbs of Dallas so who knows.
