Infamous gangbanger who murdered NYPD rookie could be released from prison — and join 43 other cop killers sprung in just 8 years

One of New York City’s most notorious cop killers – the gangbanger who murdered Police Officer Edward Byrne as he sat in his patrol car in Queens in 1988 — could become the 44th convicted cop killer sprung from prison in the last eight years when he faces the parole board later this month, The Post has learned.

The ruthless assassination of the rookie cop by David McClary on the orders of a drug kingpin stunned a city in the throes of the crack epidemic in the 1980s — and became a national symbol of the era’s lawlessness.

Byrne was just 22 and on the force for just a month when he was ambushed by McClary and three accomplices on Feb. 26, 1988. He was guarding the South Jamaica home of a witness who was planning to testify against druglord Howard “Pappy” Mason.

Absolute insanity. I grew up in NYC and remember this like it was yesterday. I was working as a security guard at Flushing hospital in Queens and was thinking of becoming a cop and when I read about this I lost interest, I couldn't believe they put him in a marked patrol car and left him by himself. I remember these animals were bragging how Bynes blue eyes popped out of his skull after they shot him and all we got from Mario Cuomo was constant refusal to allow the death penalty. Well look where we are today, 43 of these scumbags released in just 8 years. And notice the killer of the King of the hippies John Lennon is still locked up since 1980. He will stay in jail forever but not cop killers. God help me I hate the left.

It IS. The perpetrator deserves to suffer greatly for his heinous and appalling crimes.

A person convicted of murder can get parole after just 8 years? It makes life rather cheap.

Personally, I think 8 years is way too long to serve in prison for murder. I think a year is tops. After that year and all appeals are exhausted, I think the needle a cremation urn should be up next.

The insanity is that yes those wild and crazy drug fueled 80s were 40 years ago. Parole hearings happen. Unless there’s consecutive life sentences, which are pretty rare. So now 60 something people who were involved in the Miami Vice era drug trade get parole hearings. Damn I’m old.

No, the crime was in 88. In the last 8 years 43 convicted cop killers have been released for various reasons. It’s a really a pointlessly inflammatory headline that goes out of its way to ignore that sentences do end.

Tell me about it. I remember when killing a cop was without question the death penalty no exceptions. Now it’s jail with parole which is unreal. But if you kill a leftist celebrity then it’s life without parole.

Mark Chapman who killed John Lennon had no criminal record, and obviously he had mental issues, but we all know he’s never getting out.

And what someone pointed out to me a few years ago, in the mid 1970s Yoko Ono wrote a song called “Attica state”. Read these lyrics.......

“Attica state, attica state
We’re all mates with attica state
Free the prisoners, jail the judges
Free all prisoners everywhere
All they want is truth and justice
All they need is love and care”

After Chapman killed Lennon, where was Chapman sent? Attica state. And every 2 years when he’s up for parole there’s Yoko demanding he be kept locked up. I think he’s been denied parole 14 times already

Typical leftist hypocrisy. F the average citizen, F the cops, but when a leftist is the victim of a violent crime, OH!! then it’s a different story!

Yeah, keep voting Democrat New York and this is the result.

Killers of police officers should be executed. Period.

As that won’t happen in NY or California, they should be shipped off to a prison in El Salvador never to return.

The answer to this is not with the legislature and courts, but with the police themselves. “thou shalt not suffer a witch to live” is a great Biblical directive. The same rule should apply to those that kill, or attempt to kill, cops.

The word should get out to all cops of the process to kill such perps, and how to do so with minimal risk to the killer.
