Just something fun to cleanse your timeline:
Steve Stewart-Williams @SteveStuWill · Follow “[W]omen consistently have more sensitive hearing than men - by about two decibels on average - regardless of age or where they live… The researchers suggest that this may reflect a universal biological trait rather than a culturally specific pattern.”
You weren't imagining those mom superpowers. She really does have spidey senses.
The study was led by Dr. Patricia Balaresque from France's Centre for Biodiversity and Environmental Research in Toulouse and was published in Scientific Reports. It looked at 448 people across five countries and measured how the inner ear responds to sound through a technique used in newborn hearing screenings.
Scientists can measure an "echo" from your ear called "Transient-Evoked Otoacoustic Emissions" that indicates how the hairs in your cochlea respond to brief sounds, like a click or a snap.
Women's ears were a bit perkier.
In the population-based model (a), for amplitude metrics, strong contrasts were observed between population pairs, particularly those including Amerindian populations ... Sex also contributed significantly, explaining around 2 dB differences between men and women. Age sub-classes showed estimates ranging from 1.4 to 3 dB, with notable homogeneity observed between the youngest (18 - 25 and 25 - 35 years) and oldest (35 - 45 and 45 - 55 years) age groups, suggesting significant age-related trends...
So husbands, next time you fail at listening to your wife, just sit her down and say, "Don't be angry, honey, I'm just at a biological disadvantage."
I'm sure that'll go over REALLY WELL.
What?
Talk about bad advice!
It’s to compensate for the fact they never stop talking.
True. The wife is always telling me to turn the TV volume down. Ten years as an Army artilleryman doesn’t help much. Twelve with the high frequency helicopters made it worse.
From my favorite T-shirt:
My wife says I only have two faults:
1) I don’t listen
2) Something else
They have better memories as well.
As a kid I’d very quietly open the refrigerator door and my mother an entire house and multiple rooms away would yell, “Get out of that refrigerator!” Then, one day, I was in my room, and she yelled, “Get out of that refrigerator!” I thought, humm. Maybe she’s on a timer. So, shaking with withdrawal I stayed away from the refrigerator. Then, right on the hour, “Get out of that refrigerator!” Ha! I figured it out.
i remember when you said that you were leaving me, how it shocked me so much, i turned down the sound on the tv.
She said something about not communicating, or something of that sort,
then she packed up her bags and walked out the door.
My wife’s memory is so good, she remembers things that never happened!.....................
my favorite excuse when wifey tell me things I don’t care about. especially when I’m walking away and she’s trying to get my attention... but I can’t hear what she’s saying.
That’s one of the advantages of ging deaf.
I can turn off my hearing aides................
I had a hearing test and everything was fine but there was a noticeable weakness on the right side in one frequency range.
Turns out this is the same frequency at which my girlfriend complains about my driving.
Not in my experience.
Not in my experience
Not at our house. My husband has much better hearing than I...unless I am talking.
Men are around loud noises more often, at least since the industrial age. This has an effect on hearing. How is this controlled for? It makes sense that woman would have more acute hearing but there are environmental factored that may play into it here.
Men just pretend they can’t hear.
Uh we just pretend we dont hear
shhh!
