Get out your yogic decoder ring and take a journey back to the Renaissance of 1970.
This was an extraordinary event for me and the intimate audience of people first hearing the original Renaissance at Whisky a Go Go. The original tape has some issues here and there but overall it faithfully presents the unedited concert in March of 1970. This was recorded from the front balcony audience on a professional Nagra stereo recorder using Neumann Mics. In those days the acoustics at Whisky tended to have a booming sound. There are some sudden, startling feedback noises, one in particular and some Reverb crashes.
The imagery on the video is a concoction of imagery and effects and Photos my sister took with a Brownie Instamatic Camera and a lot of Renaissance art collages and cosmical images I had pieced together during spare moments.
The reason I never posted this full concert was because I always intended to perfect the quality but my busy daily life never allowed me the time to do so. I have had this video prepared for at least six years. Today I decided to post this unedited and not worry now about splicing tape issues i put on the back burner.
Some of the shouted out Audience comments are ironic and hysterically funny, in the extreme A lady shouts out, "Jumpin' Jack Flash!" and some cries of "Rock and Roll!" It is no exaggeration to say this music was not what many in the audience expected. Under the pressure from some audience shouts, Keith Relf does finally break into some Yardbirdsian, Blues Harp improvising and the whole group gets into it and it is a joy that brings a smile to the face. I think it's Keith and/or Jim saying, "We'll only play it if you dance to it!" A fantastic memory.
