Jimmy Stewart’s Daughter Recalls Life at Home With the ‘Vertigo’ Star: ‘Dad Left His Work at the Door’

Kelly Stewart-Harcourt recalls watching monumental world events — from the first American in space to the Kennedy assassination — with her parents in the library of their home at 918 N. Roxbury Drive in Beverly Hills. “About 5 or 5:30, we would gather in the library and Dad would turn on the news,” Kelly tells Closer exclusively about their daily ritual. “Mom and Dad would make their vodka and tonics. My sister and I would have our Shirley Temples. When Mike and Ron were home, because they went away to boarding school, we’d all gather there.”

Kelly and her twin sister, Judy, were born in 1951, the same year the star of It’s a Wonderful Life and his wife, Gloria, purchased the ivy-covered Tudor-style home where the couple would live for the rest of their lives. “It wasn’t big and fancy,” says Kelly, who notes that her mom did most of the decorating herself. “It was really cozy inside. I think that’s what mom and dad liked about it.”

In short, Jimmy had lived an eventful life by the time he met Gloria Hatrick McLean, a divorced former fashion model with two young sons. The couple wed in 1949 and a few years later moved into the home on Roxbury Drive, which would become their sanctuary from the world.

Located in the desirable neighborhood known as “The Flats” for its lack of hills, it was a wonderful place to raise a family. Kelly remembers walking the family golden retrievers around the neighborhood and skateboarding with her sister on the sidewalks. “I loved that it was a quiet road and very leafy,” she says.

I always enjoyed seeing Jimmy and his wife on the Jack Benny show. It looked like they were really having fun, especially his wife.

I worked with a guy who had been in the army in Vietnam. He said they were out on patrol one day when Jimmy Stewart and a group met up with them. He was on a meet the troops morale boosting tour. He said he was great. He asked if any of the guys were from California. Two people raised their hands. Jimmy said to write down their names and phone numbers and he would contact their families back home. When Stewart saw the disappointed looks on all the other faces he said you know what everyone give me your name and number and I’ll contact your family. Sure enough a few days later back in Queens NY my friend’s mom got a call from Jimmy Stewart to let her know he was doing ok. Class act.

He wanted to attend the U. S. Naval Academy to become a Navy aviator, but his father wanted him to go to Princeton, which he did. He got his chance to fly with the U. S. Army Air Corps in WWII. Hero!

Reportedly, back in the 1930s, in Manhattan, he and Henry Fonda got into an argument over politics. Jimmy was a Republican, Henry was a Democrat. It got so heated, they actually came to blows.

There they were, rolling around in the snow on a Manhattan sidewalk, trying to beat each other’s brains in, when they came to realize how stupid they were acting. Two good friends beating each other up over political issues and politicians they never knew or met. So, they stopped fighting and came to an agreement to preserve their friendship by never discussing politics in each other’s presence.

That movie scene was an exception since it was scripted for their movie.

More of that civility is needed today in my opinion.

*****

Absolutely! I have worked with, and met socially with liberals, and we got along just great as long as we didn’t discuss politics. And if they did try to steer into a political debate I would just smile and walk away.

Same thing with relatives.

There is a time and place for civility. Friends like this are a gift from God. In any civility there is a common bond that overcomes the differences.

Homosexuals, trans and other perverts have a common bond that over comes their differences.

MAGA is Trumps attempt at that common bond. The common bond is also the point of difference.

Jesus came to unite and divide. How is that possible? The point of unification and division was the same point. Everyone know what that is regarding Jesus?

Jimmy’s cozy house originally had only 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. Soon after he died, it was sold and demolished and replaced with a 9 bedrooms, 12 bathrooms (some sources say 13 bathrooms), 15 thousand+ square foot monstrosity. The new house takes up a bigger portion of the 1 acre lot.

It reminds me of a gag he did on one of his radio show. In real life, Jack’s next door neighbor was Lucille Ball. But on the radio show his next door neighbor was actor Ronald Colman and his wife Benita (”I’m in the library, Benita!”).

Jack decides to watch whatever happened to be airing on tv. He manages to catch a boxing match. Its a good one as he excitedly describes all the action in the boxing match he’s watching. Then he stops talking and there’s a pause before he says, “Darn it. The Colman’s pulled down their window shade.”

Jimmy Stewart’s real life WWII experiences impacted his acting

After the war the first movie Jimmy made was It's a Wonderful Life. Jimmy was in bad shape psychologically after the stress of all those bombing missions--the only thing he could eat was ice cream. But Lionel Barrymore (Mr. Potter) came alongside and coaxed Jimmy through a project he wanted to quit.

It was the movie that showed his range as an actor to the greatest extent. Not a hit at the time, it became a classic with showings on television. His body of work I think stacks up against anyone. So many great movies. I visited LA in 1987 and went to the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Stewart was one of the guests of the show I attended.

Though he starred in one of my ll-time favorite films (Rear Window), I especially love Jimmy Stewart from the times he would go on the Tonight Show and read the charming poems he and Gloria would write together. I’d have given my eye teeth for a man like that!
