Kelly Stewart-Harcourt recalls watching monumental world events — from the first American in space to the Kennedy assassination — with her parents in the library of their home at 918 N. Roxbury Drive in Beverly Hills. “About 5 or 5:30, we would gather in the library and Dad would turn on the news,” Kelly tells Closer exclusively about their daily ritual. “Mom and Dad would make their vodka and tonics. My sister and I would have our Shirley Temples. When Mike and Ron were home, because they went away to boarding school, we’d all gather there.”
Kelly and her twin sister, Judy, were born in 1951, the same year the star of It’s a Wonderful Life and his wife, Gloria, purchased the ivy-covered Tudor-style home where the couple would live for the rest of their lives. “It wasn’t big and fancy,” says Kelly, who notes that her mom did most of the decorating herself. “It was really cozy inside. I think that’s what mom and dad liked about it.”

In short, Jimmy had lived an eventful life by the time he met Gloria Hatrick McLean, a divorced former fashion model with two young sons. The couple wed in 1949 and a few years later moved into the home on Roxbury Drive, which would become their sanctuary from the world.
Located in the desirable neighborhood known as “The Flats” for its lack of hills, it was a wonderful place to raise a family. Kelly remembers walking the family golden retrievers around the neighborhood and skateboarding with her sister on the sidewalks. “I loved that it was a quiet road and very leafy,” she says.

Great article. Amazing man.
A lovely clip playing tribute to how Jimmy Stewart’s real life WWII experiences impacted his acting:

Now there’s a Hollywood actor that I miss. Can’t say it about many.
Glad he left his work at home.
Because that time he inherited a brothel with Shirley Jones could have gotten a little messy.
I have been looking at different venues to watch that movie again but with no luck. That clip with him and Henry Fonda discussing the virtues of being a republican over a democrat is priceless.
The war changed him and his character style, in my opinion. He was a kid in the neighborhood type early on. After the war, he could play a character with a hard edge. Harvey to Bend in The River type change. He and Audie Murphy were good together. Both had been through the fire and both showed the edge that seeing more than you should made them great actors. I miss the those types of people in our movies. PTSD from war is a real thing, yet in their time you just handled it.
“Doggone it Harley! I’d let you read my letter if I got one!” One of the best movies he ever made. The only movie I ever watched a man killed by a walnut. 😀
My wife told me he oftentimes played “funny buggers” with Spencer Tracy, but I have my doubts. Anyone heard tell of that?
She also once told me that Leon Redbone was dead, 18 months before it was true, so maybe she just likes to see me suffer.
BTTT
No mention, of course, that the Stewarts lost a son in the Army in combat in Vietnam. Like Gary Lewis (Jerry’s son), he served despite having celebrity parents.
Dean Martin had a son that was killed flying a F-14 Tomcat for the USN. We had patriotic Hollywood types in years past. There were some damn good people that served. Trump will pick up enlistments because you can wear a uniform confident the CIC has your back. I got out during Jimmy Carter, he sucked. If Reagan had been president I might have stayed in. IMO
Fonda and Stewart were best friends from the days of struggling Broadway actors.
They were mirror opposites in so many ways. Politics (obviously) for one. When Jimmy was asked how they became so close, he said “There’s some things we just don’t discuss!”
More of that civility is needed today in my opinion.
Super article!
I always felt Mr. Stewart was as good in real life as he was on screen.
There are few in Hollywood that can earn that title.
I love his movies. IMO he’s one of the great all time actors.
Here is the scene.

I saw Leon Redbone in a small intimate concert venue.
Zillow says his house is worth 38 million now. Wow!
