[OFFICIAL.]

WAR DEPARTMENT, WASHINGTON, March 27 -- 1:30 P.M.

To Maj.-Gen. John A. Dix:

The following official reports of operations of the Army of the Potomac on Saturday have been received this morning.

No movements have been made on either side before Richmond or Petersburg since Saturday night

E.M. STANTON,

Secretary of War.

CITY POINT, 10:30 A.M., Monday, March 27.

Hon. E.M. Stanton, Secretary of War:

The battle of the 25th resulted in the following losses on our side:

Second Corps. -- Killed, 51; wounded, 462; missing, 177.
Sixth Corps. -- Killed, 47; wounded, 401; missing, 30.
Ninth Corps. -- Killed, 68; wounded, 338; missing, 506.

Our captures by the Second Corps were 309; by the Sixth Corps, 469; and by the Ninth Corps, 1,049.

The Second and Sixth Corps pushed forward and captured the enemy's strong intrenchments and turned it against him and still held it. In trying to retake this the battle was continued until 8 o'clock at night, the enemy losing very heavily.

HUMPREYS estimates the loss of the enemy in his front at three times his own, and Gen. WRIGHT, in his front, as double that of ours.

The enemy brought in a flag of truce for permission to collect his dead, which were between their picket line and their main line of fortifications. Permission was granted.

U.S. GRANT, Lieut.-General.

” Hon. E.M. Stanton, Secretary of War “.

Only the war-infatuated New York Times could find anything “ honorable “ about Stanton.

BrexitBen: "Only the war-infatuated New York Times could find anything “ honorable “ about Stanton."

Edwin Stanton was an Ohio Democrat and previously Democrat Pres. Buchanan's Attorney General.

Now, as the Civil War approaches its conclusion with Confederates' "unconditional surrender", many key Union figures will share in the credit for victory.

Among those will be Sec. of War, Edwin Stanton -- noted for his blunt aggressive personality, Stanton was key in organizing the Union's logistics, including manpower recruitment & conscription, industrial production and railroads transporting troops, their equipment & supplies.

After Lincoln's assassination, Stanton clashed with Pres. Johnson over Johnson's perceived leniency towards the defeated Confederates, and Johnson tried to fire Stanton, leading to Johnson's impeachment.

When removal of Johnson failed in the Senate, Stanton resigned from the War Department and returned to practicing law.
Pres. Grant thought highly enough of Stanton to nominate him for the US Supreme Court in 1869, and Stanton was confirmed, however he died just four days later, age 55.

Stanton's views on "Little Mac", Union Gen. George McClellan:

Sec. of War Edwin Stanton was a logistician, essential to Union victory:
