French bulldog is still top US breed, but another has gained big momentum

NEW YORK — The U.S. still has a major case of French bulldog fever, but a very different breed is staunchly chasing dog lovers' hearts, according to American Kennel Club statistics released Tuesday.

For the third year in a row, the comical, controversial Frenchie tops the club's annual rundown of the nation's most prevalent purebred dogs.

Frenchies are followed by Labrador retrievers, golden retrievers, German shepherds, poodles and some other longtime faves. (Rounding out the top 10: dachshunds, beagles, Rottweilers, bulldogs and German shorthaired pointers.)

Yet keep an eye on the cane corso. The powerful, protective breed vaulted from nearly 50th to 14th in the rankings in just a decade.

Popularity is seen as a mixed blessing among dog breeders and as an outright scourge by their critics. Some animal welfare activists say the AKC rankings drive fads that fuel puppy mills. The AKC says the list documents, not promotes, dog-ownership trends, and the nonprofit club notes that it conducts thousands of breeder and pet store inspections per year.

Boston terrier.

My parents have one. Not my cup of tea, I prefer our Dobermans but a cute little dog, low maintenance and certainly friendly. Their only draw back is you need to be careful about their diet. People who feed them junk will discover they can clear a house in under five seconds.

Feed them a proper RAW diet and they are fine.

No. The best dog breed is “Miles the Border Collie/Nuggethead.”

😊. The wonderful little Shi Tzu ties for that award. Our little one recently died at the ripe old age of 18. They are the epitome of cuddle bunnies. The only drawback -— they have to be frequently groomed, which is the reason we’ll never have another one. Other than that, they are the perfect lap dog. But, yes, our loyal, naughty little doxxies are equally lovable.

You have pretty much described the dog I have now. He’s a Bichon but was told there’s some Maltese in him, but it’s not evident.

Low maintenance - they don’t shed. And i would never try to keep the show coat. Just take him/her to the groomer every 8-10 weeks and ask for a puppy cut. 14-15 pounds. The poops are never bigger than a tootsie roll. Usually smaller.

I walk him for 2 miles everyday. He makes everyone smile because when he’s walking it looks like he’s smiling.

He very very much wants to please. Can be a bit stubborn when he knows it’s bath time or something else he doesn’t like. And can get a bit of separation anxiety.

Cane Corso is a very expensive and very dangerous breed of canine.
They are much bigger and more muscular than Pit Bull terriers.
The fact that they are gaining in popularity is not a good thing.
It means that people will start dying from them just like Pit Bulls.

It happens all the time. That is why you should have the breeder put a micro chip in any puppy you purchase.

I live in southern NH. About ten miles north of the MA border.
About a year ago someone in my town posted their really nice Chocolate Lab went missing. He was about a year old. They posted signs around town with his picture. He was never found. Probably ended up down in MA, RI or CT.

Agreed. Wife and I have had many mutts during our lives and they were ALWAYS the best. We have two purebreds now (dachshund and shih-tzu) but they were rescues so I am a bit keen on them.

I think our shih-tzu qualifies for that. It is not a large one - he is probably half the size of most shih-tzus you see around. Showed my old boss a pic of him when we first got him - almost wanted to deck him right there when he said “Damn that’s an ugly dog!” Have come to realize it’s too true 👍

There is some truth to that. I have known a goodly number of people who have the Cane Corsos; in general they are VERY well behaved (proper training) but you just KNOW that could change in an instant. One i knew was a VERY irresponsible family that lived next door to us many years ago, that dog regularly got loose. Thankfully my wife and I have handled them before and are well versed in calming them.

Awww, so sweet!

My favorite dog ever (and I’ve had many) are my Great Pyrs. Giant teddy bears and so sweet and gentle, especially with our goat babies
