Cuba suffers nationwide power outage, plunging millions into darkness

Cuba’s power grid collapsed Friday night, triggering a nationwide power outage and plunging its more than 10 million people into darkness.

“At around 8:15 p.m. tonight, a failure at the Diezmero substation caused a significant loss of generation in the west of #Cuba and with it the failure of the National Electric System,” Cuba’s Ministry of Energy and Mines said in a statement.

Efforts to restore service are underway, the ministry added.

Video filmed by CNN in the capital Havana showed streets and buildings shrouded in total darkness, as people used electric torches to navigate the streets.

It marks the latest in a series of failures on the Caribbean island struggling with creaking infrastructure, natural disasters and economic turmoil.

Cuban officials have previously blamed US economic sanctions, which increased under the previous administration of President Donald Trump, for further crippling an already ailing energy sector.

Critics also fault a lack of investment in infrastructure by the communist government.

For nearly a week in October, most of Cuba suffered near-total blackouts, the worst energy outages in decades.

Leftists of all types never learn. Instead they double-down on their failures. So I suppose Cuba will try more socialism to fix the problem.

But at least they probably won’t shoot the power station manager, as Stalin would have. So there’s that.

socialism/communism ALWAYS fails, when the infrastructure they stole from capitalists eventually fails.

But I keep hearing in the media that Cuba is a far better functioning country that the US, their healthcare system beats ours, etc.

Next communist power grid collapse will be in California.

The sanctions don’t prevent imports. Lack of money prevents imports.

Cuba is broke, flat broke.

Cuba has nothing the world needs. No sales, no money

The their Russian sugar daddy quit funneling aid into Castro’s pocket, spending on infrastructure (little as it was) pretty much stopped. During the cold war the USSR was happy to keep Cuba as a client state to a) annoy the USA and b) to have a base for exporting Russian style communism to the Western hemisphere.

With Uncle Vlad occupied in Ukraine, sorry Cuba no more money or equipment for you.

I thought Cuba was the workers paradise and after decades of communism would be a land of milk and honey with the best schools and medical care in the world.

I’ve spent my entire life prepping to live despite Democrats best efforts.
Cuba is a good example of a model Democrat society.
Dead men walking.
War is a terrible thing, but you can’t just count bodies
you need to count the impact on your future.
Ukraine will probably never recover. Russia has lost a generation of working people.
Who is going to support the old Farts in charge?
Your aging missile warheads?
I prefer Chicken teriyaki and rice over U235 any day.

Again? It’s not news that their power grid goes down. It’s becoming more newsworthy when they actually get it running in between the outages!

Nice historical aspect. Amazing that the socialists still cannot maintain a functional economy and American socialists refuse to see this and admit that system’s utter failures.
