China Hits Canada With Tariffs in Indirect Riposte to Trump
NY Times ^ | 03/08/2025 | Keith Bradsher

China announced tariffs of up to 100 percent on canola, pork and other foods from Canada on Saturday, in retaliation for Canada’s decision last August to collect steep taxes on imports of Chinese electric vehicles, steel and aluminum.

The Chinese tariffs, which take effect on March 20, were also a clear warning to Canada — and, indirectly, Mexico — not to cooperate with the United States on trade. The Trump administration, like the Biden administration before it, has been demanding that Canada and Mexico not serve as back doors for low-cost Chinese goods to enter the U.S. market under North American free trade agreements.

What was Canada thinking?

Trudeau has really damaged Canada. I’m hoping the US gets our farmland back from Chinese ownership, the same with meat processing plants.

Hmm, canola oil? We can’t help them with that since we are phasing out seed oils.

Canada doesn’t think. It’s all emotion.

If Mexico and Canada get it together, the entire continent could put a serious hurt on China.

Article says Canada was helping us stop back door imports into the USA of Chinese electric vehicles, steel and aluminum.

I'm no defender of Canada and their tariffs, but in this case the bad guys are China not Canada.

Here’s how Chinese tariffs have worked in the past. China makes a big, political deal out of “punishing” suppliers in a country whose policies displease the CCP. The Chinese then import those same items tariff free into a nearby country and quickly move them across the border into China with no added costs.

Are you saying that China is working through a “nearby ” proxy country like Mongolia that it could actually control? Or even Russia?

Turdeau is just another POTATUS.

The people hiding behind him are the real threat to freedom.

Yes. With the Chinese it’s all about face and image. They want, say the Australian government to crackdown on dissidents and if they don’t then the Chinese enact a punishing tariff, on, say seafood. Suddenly, the amount of seafood Australia exports to Mongolia goes from zero to whatever they originally exported to China. Weird, eh?

“Trudeau has really damaged Canada.”

I agree.

It’s too bad liberals don’t learn from their mistakes. The liberals in the big cities will continue to elect liberals to rule over Canada.

Couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of folks, save those that harbor cartel animals.

So CCP, whatschagonnado? Eat rice? Your rich technocrats won’t like that. They have become used to pretending to be successful “businessmen” in a commie trash economy. They won’t like seeing what the actual bill for that looks like.

China’s food price is about to go up

Not being able to produce enough food on its own is China’s greatest weakness.

like the Biden administration before it,

A surprising bit of truth from the NYT. But isn't it amazing, China hits Canada with tariffs and the NYT says it a dagger to heart of Trump?
