A Long Island caretaker was arrested this week in the heinous abuse of an 83-year-old woman in her care that was caught on video, police said Friday.

A guardian of the victim had placed a camera in the elderly woman’s Woodmere home after finding bruises on her late last month, Nassau County Police said.

The surveillance equipment allegedly captured the victim’s caretaker, Merlyn Fredericks, 36, yanking the helpless old woman harshly and beating her in her face and body, authorities said.

The guardian notified police, and Fredericks was arrested Thursday and charged with felony assault, as well as endangering the welfare of the senior, cops said.

Horrible. My sister took care of my mom and she was awful enough to my mom.

We see examples of this every now and then. But I wonder, if your child came home from daycare with unexplained bruises (meaning significant enough that they could not come from rough and tumble play) would you send him back hoping to catch the perpetrator in the act or would you pull him out of the facility?

If you truly love your parents take care of them yourselves. I stopped my life to take care of my father for 10 years 24/7, no vacations, no day off. You do what you have to do. It was the greatest joy of my life to care for him.

Here at clan Buttons we have a long tradition of looking after our own. Home schooling, home care. The brave do home birth...within reason. :)
But I’ve taken people to hospitals for things like broken bones, and in general I get a good vibe from the medical professionals. There are things they’re good at, and most of them want to fix what’s wrong. They get stressed, they get cranky, yet often the love shines through anyway.
As RR said, trust but verify, regardless. Family and strangers both.

These stories just break my heart!

I took care of my Dad for 12 years while he had his own apartment 2 minutes from my house. After enough medical emergencies he relented and let me move him to Assisted Living - where I was a total (Wisconsin Nice!) PITA to the staff and management. I was there all the time. At random times. He was well cared for.

Same thing went for when he had to be moved to a nursing facility as he died from cancer.

If you can’t do it yourself, keep good tabs on the people who are caring for your loved ones. It’s well worth the peace of mind.

Mom is 86 and a firecracker. Still owns her own home, widowed but has her BFF of 50 years as her roommate. Active in everything. Learned to shoot a .22 a few years back. She’ll die in place, no doubt. But I would do the same for her if she needed my help.

God bless you

Our mom had a stroke, and went into a county "long-term care" home. Even though it was supposed to be a "good" one, it was run by the same state-sponsored union goons as all the others. Mom quickly developed bedsores, there were strange/insane people roaming the halls, it often smelled of urine, etc...

We got mom out of there, brought her home, and Sis took care of mom full time, until mom passed.

Even though Sis can be difficult at times among our siblings, her care for mom and her sacrifice will always have my respect.

You are so right. I do not understand why people put their loved ones in institutions in the care of strangers. My sisters and I rotated care of my mother. it was such a blessing to be able to return some of the loving care she had lavished on me so many years before.
