From an 11th generation Virginian with ancestors in the Valley, let me say, “Burn in Hell Phil Sheridan, burn in Hell!”.

Phil Sheridan is the perfect hero for the war loving New York Times. His insane, “ scorched earth “ tactics in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia cemented his infamy.

President Andrew Johnson considered Sheridan a tyrant, after his brutality was extended in the Indian Wars.

This is why Grant and Sherman moved to send Sheridan out to Texas to keep an eye on Mexico (there was a threat of Maximillian trying to sieze Texas...so they claimed anyway).

They were also afraid that he would be the next President so they wanted him far from Washington.
