Daryl Hall says there will never be a reunion with his former musical partner John Oates.
Back in November 2023, Hall filed a lawsuit (as well as obtained a temporary restraining order) against Oates, trying to prevent him from selling his share of the Hall & Oates catalog to Primary Wave Music. Hall claimed that such a move would violate the terms of the duo's business agreement.
Now, over.a year after the litigation was made public, Hall is certain he and Oates will not be able mend their differences.
"That ship has gone to the bottom of the ocean," he recently told The Times. "I've had a lot of surprises in my life, disappointments, betrayals, so I'm kind of used to it."
These days, Hall works with various other people. His most recent album, 2024's D, was co-written and co-produced with Dave Stewart, with whom he's worked with on several projects. Hall's relationship with Stewart, he said, is different than the one he had with Oates: "It's more meaningful, a real collaborative relationship — and it's based on maturity."

On the other side, Oates also appears to be just fine with Hall & Oates being over. He also has spent recent years collaborating with others, including Vince Gill, Jerry Douglas and more.
"As far as I'm concerned, I've moved on," Oates told Rolling Stone last year. "I feel like I have a new lease on my creative life."
Yes, indeed. One of my favorite episodes was with Billy Gibbons. At one point when Billy hit a classic low, bluesy vocal note, he turned to Daryl and told him it was his turn. Daryl laughed and declined.
Yawn.
I’m from that era. Their music sucked.
Yeah Darryl has messed up a bunch of harmonies and some lead vocals when they weren’t his songs.
I like Billy but his style gets old with me after a few songs. ZZ puts on a great show though.

Thank you , Jesus!
Never heard such treacley crap in all my born days.
Hall wrote all their music. Oates had a nice voice.
No one cares.
The “music” sucked bigtime.
It was noise.
Terrible crap.
Especially on “Family Man”.
IMO, Daryl Hall doesn’t need John Oates to make great music anyway.
This was another good one, two Philly Guys....

They created music together. Then, George Michael highlighted his hair and upstaged Andrew. That’s the real story.
It was about an incident in George Michael's life. He was dating two or three girls at the same time.
Also, he went to Steely Dan lengths for the saxophone solo. He came to the U.S. and got solos from several top flight session guys.
He finally had some British guy come in. Michael told him the session player who had already attempted it, and he said, "I'm not as good as them." They asked him to give it a try, and Michael finally found what he was looking for.
He doesn’t need him, but he had his greatest success with him. Why be a jerk about it?
That is not true at all. Oates cowrote, She's Gone, Sarah Smile, You Make My Dreams, I Can't Go for That, Maneater, Adult Education, and Out of Touch, among others. So, that's at least 3 #1 hits, and 4 or more top ten hits. It's ridiculous to say Hall wrote all the music. (Also, Sarah and Janna Allen, and Warren Pash cowrote with Hall.) This is not Simon and Garfunkel.
Hall's problem is not Oates, it's hubris.
Both from the 1970s.
Their 1980s output was pretty awful, although their most commercially successful. As it often goes in pop music. Mediocrity sells.
Since they’re near 80 years old, I wouldn’t expect more ‘hits’ anyway
I think Hall seems to be angry that he was a success, but he had to have a partner. Seems foolish to me.
