3000 to 3500 BC would put it in the same time period as the earliest Pyramids of Egypt.
These features were built more for military value than any religious meaning.
Picts, Saxons, Romans, Druids, Vikings, Normans, Germans, everybody was trying to get in at one time or another.............................

The Egyptian pyramids originated with the 2nd Dynasty, c. 2890 – c. 2686 BC, these earthworks are circa earlier. :^)
