The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.
March 1st, getting close to gardening time here in central KS!
After a chilly day today - 30 degrees and sunny - we are looking at a very nice warm-up into the 50’s and close to 60 for the upcoming week.
The snow they were predicting will most likely fall as rain, which is MUCH easier to shovel, LOL! :)
I’m trying Lupine and Hollyhocks in my garden this year.
Bkmk
Hollyhocks are one of my favorites. I like the black ones (Nigra), but all of them are pretty and stately. After our barn is re-painted, I am going to plant a row of them along the side that faces the house porch. They’ll be so cheerful to see!
Remember that they are biennials, and only bloom every OTHER year. So, plant some this spring and then next spring too, so you’ll always have some in bloom. They can get invasive, but they are easy enough to spot and pull out/move around where you want them to be. :)
Here in Central Florida I have been planting potatoes, spacing the planting dates by about 3 weeks since mid December. I have Canela Russet, Yukon Gold, Red Pontiac and Purple Majesty. I also have pineapples, green beans and pole beans. I am growing in 8’X8’ raised beds. I still have a few more that I am undecided about what to plant. I may go with heirloom tomatoes in one and not sure about the rest.
It’s a beautiful morning here in Oregone...cool but sunny. Rain back tomorrow. But, the crocuses are up and Robins (%#%^&,^) are back.
Can do.
“I may go with heirloom tomatoes in one and not sure about the rest.”
We can give you tons of choices; we all have our favorites, for sure.
Think about what you like to eat, or what is expensive in the grocery store that you can grow for yourself.
Also, don’t forget flowers for pollinators and ‘food for the soul.’ I am greatly upping my ‘flower game’ this season. :)
Looking forward to the rain.
I always thought my winter garden looks better than my summer garden (too much hot wind):
My helpers loved the spring weather!
Thanks for making thread!
I made a plan in January for starting seeds indoors, but got sick a few times since so I am behind on that, but as weather is somewhat moderating, I am renewed to get back on track with indoor and outdoor plans.
Don’t usually start outdoor planting until mid or late March.
planning more ways of veggie gardening (vertical etc) in my small spaces, hope to grow excess to preserve, and to maintain fruit plants, perennial herbs ornamentals.
Beautiful everything, Bon! It cheers me up to see all this color!
Thank you. It does for us too. We’ve had a lot of sadness over the past couple of years. I call them my “grief gardens”- they’ve helped a lot with that.
There’s our favorite two buddies, great pictures, thanks glad to see you on the thread. Things look beautiful and clean no dust.
Oh, the dust is still here! I’ve been working at it for weeks now and it keeps coming and coming - opened my mailbox yesterday and there was a layer of ash at the bottom (which I’d just cleared out two days before).
My car is covered in ash almost daily and every time I drive somewhere I have to clear off the windshield.
We’ve had some light to moderate winds lately and apparently those are picking up the ash from the local fires and depositing it everywhere - a brew with a lot of toxic chemicals.
I spend more time indoors now with air purifiers running 24/7 - I change out the filters monthly and they are almost black. The air is very toxic right now. Hopefully the rain expected tonight will clear some of it out.
My neighbor’s cardiologist told her to stay indoors with air purifiers. I’m heeding that advice.
Yesterday the high was near 60. Today and tomorrow, the highs will be below freezing. Then it should warm back up gradually to the 50’s again, with a couple days of rain in the forecast.
I’m at that point where I know Spring is coming, but I still see winter around me. I’m ready for 60’s and 70’s. Plus, we’ve almost used up our currently cut, stacked, and seasoned fire wood supply.
Daylight Savings change comes next weekend, right?
I am planting goji berries this year to complement my blue berries. Two super foods that match nutrients the other lacks.
Holy cow. Amazing that is still happening. BTW love those oranges. So jealous! Thanks again for checking in.
