I’ve seen a few catch on fire. It is all the hydrocarbons that these ‘beasts’ have to use to lubricate.

Could be construction....could be other things. The structural design of these towers yields their circularity of the main support. If that is compromised by incomplete connection of the sections OR even just a variation in the wall thickness just sets it up for eventual failure.

From 5 years ago...

Wind Turbine Blades Can’t Be Recycled, So They’re Piling Up in Landfills Companies are searching for ways to deal with the tens of thousands of blades that have reached the end of their lives.

Bet that's still the case...

Could it have been compromised by damage from a past tornado, with gradual wear finishing it off months or years later?

From right before Trump was sworn it... Yup, still can't be recycled. Thats so green, eh?

Wyoming Doubles Down On Wind Blade Disposal In Coal Mines, Tabling Alternative Wyoming legislators tabled a bill Wednesday that would have created landfill deposits at wind farm sites to dispose of their worn-out turbine blades. State agencies say coal mine disposal — just approved by federal government — is better.

Hope those coal mines are played out...

I recall an article from a couple years ago that there were only 3 sites accepting windmill blades in the country (one was near Casper where I lived; they were simply burying them with a bulldozer). There was a fellow who was trying to get investors interested in a recycling process for them, but I have no idea if that has born fruit. My understanding is they are basically fiberglass, which could be recycled in principle.

Stopped reading at, “ … a windmill … “

A windmill? Really? The author expects to be taken seriously?

It looks like one of those old kinetic sculptures. It has a lot of kinetic energy in a wind and then just tears itself apart, it failure starts.

I would not be surprised if the failure of only a small number of these negate their entire purpose.

“A wind turbine’s blades can be longer than a Boeing 747 wing, so at the end of their lifespan they can’t just be hauled away. First, you need to saw through the lissome fiberglass using a diamond-encrusted industrial saw to create three pieces small enough to be strapped to a tractor-trailer.”

Well, they sure didn’t think the life cycle of wind turbine blades through did they.

These massive windmills are stupid. I don't think they break even without massive government subsidies.
