President Trump wants to abolish the Department of Education. Sounds outrageous to some.

Writing for The Hill, Justin Hawkins notes, “The Trump administration is reportedly preparing an executive order that could eliminate or roll back significant parts of the Department of Education, a move that has already received significant criticism from Trump’s political opponents.”

Some people seem to feel that neither education nor schools existed in this country until Jimmy Carter created the Dept of Education in the 1970s.

We will be fine without it. Actually, clearly, we will be better off without it.

A society educates.

Government indoctrinates.

(Explain like I'm five)

What does the US Department of education do? What was the original intent of the Department? When did it get into the student loan business? Who/what issued Pell grants before the Department?

Finally, what the rationale for taking the administration of education away from the States, Counties, Towns, and other local government?

I have collected old technical manuals from the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s since I was a teen and have read through and learned from every single one of them. now retired I have even more time to find more and read more of them. one of the fascinating things about the tech manuals of the past is the advanced language and math built in to each one of them expecting that the reader already possesses the education level needed to understand the material . the MOST fascinating thing all to me is the fact that these highly technical manuals that many college grads of today would struggle to understand were written for the AVERAGE high school graduate. yes folks...the people who designed the bridges, skyscrapers, flying machines and the vast array of warfighting machinery that won WWll were educated LONG before the Carter.

Your tech manuals parallels my experience articles in research journals during the 60’s and literary level requirements in the same journals today. In the past compound sentences are often used to explain the theories and results. While today the requirements are fourth grade reading level.
In my opinion each advancement back then were far deeper than ones today.

Yes. Education should be handled at the state, and especially the local level.

There are countless federal mandates that must be followed in the schools, most of which are either useless or redundant - and are very very costly.

Of course, Trump’s political opponents would disapprove this.I can’t say for sure what would happen if the Dept. of Education would be disbanded, but it has certainly had it’s share of complaints & some of those complaints would seem to be for good reason. They have had had plenty of chances to make it better rather than worse in my opinion.

The DoEd was instituted for providing govt support for the teacher’s unions. Get their power reduced and education will improve. Period

And since then education had done nothing but go straight down hill.

For everybody in public schools.
