Russia Demands Ukraine Cities It Doesn't Control as Part of Trump Deal: ISW
Newsweek ^ | 2/27/2025 | Isabel van Brugen

Russia is demanding control of cities in Ukraine that its forces don't currently occupy as part of a deal with President Donald Trump to potentially bring an end to the war, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) has said.

-snip-

Trump has suggested that both Russia and Ukraine must make concessions in the war. Kyiv has rejected any idea of ceding territory to Moscow, while Putin has demanded that Ukraine give up its aspirations of joining the NATO military alliance, and cede its Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions.

The ISW think tank, based in Washington D.C., noted that there are several large cities in these regions that Russian forces "do not currently occupy and have no prospect of seizing."

Russia's occupation of the remainder of the four Ukrainian oblasts would include large cities such as Kherson City (pre-war population of about 275,000), Kramatorsk (147,000 people), and Zaporizhzhia City (706,000)—all of which remain under Ukrainian control," the think tank said.

Conceding to Putin's demands would effectively hand over 1 million Ukrainians to Russia, the ISW said.

Newsweek is not a reliable source.

Most Americans are OK with no deal.

As long as we shut off the spigot.

Russia get Crimea, Russia leaves all other Ukrainian territory, Ukraine agrees not to enter NATO and gives US rare earth mineral rights. US will then have to protect Ukraine to a certain extent in order to actually obtain the minerals, many of which are currently under Ukrainian land Russia is now occupying.

This is my prediction.

I’m surprised Russia has not demanded Odessa.

ISW is going to be really busy the next several weeks trying to undermine any peace deal.

My prediction...Russia gets Crimea and the other area that was annexed by a referendum.

The USA will get mineral rights.

Ukraine will make a deal for gas to go through their pipelines to help the EU out....and Germany in particular.

Russia will get the areas in fee...and they will become part of Russia proper.

Why...because of something "Z" said...It went something like this...Russia can have it...and after we're part of NATO, we'll start a tussle and get it back.

I think the minerals will be only on lands now held by Ukraine. Russia will make their own deal.

ISW has Victoria Nuland connections. It is not clear how they would know who has demanded what. ISW done this before and it meant as little then as it does now.

The only thing that matters is the budget and whether or not Reconciliation in the Senate is going to adopt the House bill with no editing at all.

The numbers decide everything, and as best I have seen they currently are $0 for Ukraine. There is some reason to believe that the numbers are so desperate that even if Trump wanted to send money he could not.

Russia will get the Donbass and Crimea. No way will they settle for not getting what they won.

And again, assuming there are any minerals in significant quantities there, which is doubtful, what does a deal mean in the context of Trump getting the money back?

It certainly cannot mean that the United States funds all the exploration and then the mining and then gets the minerals after having spent all that money for exploration and mining. That’s not getting money back. That’s spending money.

For this to mean anything, it has to mean that Ukraine sends people out to do the exploration and then the mining and then they send whatever minerals are produced to America, and they pay for all of that exploration and mining themselves.

They can agree to anything they want to agree with, they don’t have the money to do that. This was a manufactured story to address desperation created by the realization that Trump wants out

Expect Russia to claim all the Donbas regions. They already voted to join the Russian Federation.

That sets up WW3 for sure. Not right away, mind you. More likely in 10-30 years. It depends on how fast Europe fractures and new alliances develop without the US as big dog. It also depends on demographics (when does some country go radical muzzie?), and if and exactly how long it takes for mid-wealth countries to nuke up “for security”. Nukes delay the big dust-up, but, the results are of course far worse.
