Police say a 23-year-old man who allegedly kicked in the door of the wrong apartment just before 1:00 a.m. February 23, 2025, was shot dead by a resident inside.
The Lexington Herald-Leader reported the deceased as Matthew Maggart, a Western Kentucky University student.
Police indicated the rightful resident of the apartment was on the phone with 911 while Maggart was “actively kicking the door to their apartment.”
The Bowling Green Police Department released a statement noting that Maggart did live in the apartment complex, but the door he allegedly kicked in was not the one to his apartment.

Man! That sucks hard!
“Someone kicking in the door to your living space provides an extremely reliable presumption of ill-intent.”
unless they are dressed in Blue, oh wait they still have ill-intent regardless of whether they got the right address
Police: Man Shot Dead After Kicking in Door to Wrong Apartment

This is terrible news. Now the owner will have to go and get a new door.
Matthew Maggart.
Boy I bet he was brutally teased about that last name growing up.
“rightful resident of the apartment was on the phone with 911 while Maggart was “actively kicking the door to their apartment.”
There’s no mention of why the alleged intruder was “actively kicking the door” of the wrong apartment, which leaves the reader to wonder whether this a sympathy/anti gun story or actual reporting . . .
It is difficult to get an on the record statement from a man who has just been shot dead...
He won’t do that again.
A) He was drunk, got the wrong door, when he couldn’t get the key to work he decided to kick the door down in a fit of rage. Or;
B) He knew exactly whose door he was kicking in because of some perceived beef with the resident. And the shooter may not want to talk about the nature of the beef between them.
Mebbe we need a regulation on guns in apt bldgs. I am all for everyone being armed and shooting anyone forcing an entry.
But, if you miss your neighbor is the next target. How about mandating that all such guns use frangible bullets — like air marshals use? Simple ceramics would work. Don’t need exotic metals.
Sounds good to me if the people who live in apartment buildings think it will work. I live in my own house.
“Impaired” is how the police put it.
Set to graduate this May with a degree in Hospitality Management.
Really sad for everyone.
You have no idea what you are talking about. Frangible ammo isn’t a reliable stopper of aggressive assailants. If it was all police would carry it.
Don’t presume to tell those who know better what they have to use in the interest of soothing your personal fears.
Just one test of frangible bullets was conducted at our laboratory.
Out of curiosity, we fired at a Kevlar police vest as a target that was hung by a clamp.
That one bullet passed through both front and back. (!)
We decided, along with the Swiss inventor, not to talk about it.

I’ve also seen them pre-fragment on the way to a cardboard target. I’m not interested in trusting my life to them. HST or Gold Dot JHP, all day every day.
“It is difficult to get an on the record statement from a man who has just been shot dead...”
OK, that’s fair . . .
