Kyiv has agreed terms with Washington on a minerals deal that Ukrainian officials hope will improve relations with the Trump administration and pave the way for a long-term US security commitment.
Ukrainian officials say Kyiv is now ready to sign the agreement on jointly developing its mineral resources, including oil and gas, after the US dropped demands for a right to $500bn in potential revenue from exploiting the resources.
Although the text lacks explicit security guarantees, the officials argued that they had negotiated far more favourable terms and depicted the deal as a way of broadening the relationship with the US to shore up Ukraine’s prospects after three years of war.

Um…yeah he agrees. He has no leverage
TRUMP: “GIBS-ME-DAT-RARE-EARTHS”
Zelensky: Yes, sir. Anything else, sir?
The war will be over in two weeks. Big agreement.
exotic dancer deal
Oil and gas? We have plenty of our own, Drill!
Two weeks is unlikely.
The budget fight is upcoming with the first wave tonight. If it has 0 or near 0 Ukraine money, then there will only be time for Zelensky to determine the EU isn’t going to cover the US shortfall.
That should be the end.
As for this agreement, I thought there were to be security guarantees in it. If none, then it’s a non-event.
Put it towards the debt! We’re down to 35.7 trillion if they do that.
Like many FReepers, every silver lining has a dark cloud.
Fantastic. Utterly corrupt DC, in the middle of being reformed, enters into a permanent business relationship with neonazi and completely corrupt Ukraine.
This is like pairing off a recovering alcoholic with a full blown drunk.
The reality here, Blackrock is getting paid.
Nice markets in Europe - and Ukraine is closer. Still the rare earth stuff is the main deal.
If Biden was still President our country wouldn’t get squat and DC goons would be making $400,000 for an hour long ‘speech’ in Kyiv. (Money going to their slush oops I mean to their ‘Foundation’...
‘
Some might also be headed toward the new United States Sovereign Wealth Fund.
How does Blackrock get paid?
Not really. Trumps position is that a formal security agreement isn’t necessary. If we are jointly involved Russia will not risk further actions that would put them in direct conflict with us. Ukraine gets what it needs but it has to stay true to us to keep that. Good for both sides really.
Signing scheduled for Feb 28 in DC.
Well, it will traverse govts. So a pro Russian govt installed in Kiev will adhere to the agreement (even though there is nothing there. 0 oil and about 1 Trillion cubic meters of gas which puts it at about 17th place globally)
No promise of security help, its all meaningless.
And for God’s sake, forget this silliness. It will all be decided in the budget fight unfolding.
What was on your list of 5 things?
The left will set their hair on fire.
Why would Ukraine ever trust any promise from the US? They had the #3 stockpile of nuclear weapons, and gave them all up voluntarily (with the American Left dancing for joy and celebrating Clinton), in exchange for the promise that we would protect them if Russia ever invaded. It was called the Budapest Memorandum. Obama and Biden both turned their backs on that promise, as Russia invaded repeatedly.
No, they never did. They were always owned and controlled by Moscow. There was no Ukrainian missile force....ever. And we did not promise to protect them. There was no alliance or treaty. Just a memorandum.
Furthermore, two other fine points. The Ukraine that signed Budapest died in the coup of 2014. The government there in Kiev is an entirely different entity that was not a participant. Agreements with Germany all died when the Nazis launched the war.
Second, the other part is that nobody (including us) would interfere in Ukraine. We threw a coup in 2014, and a war. Budapest is a dead letter by over a decade.
