It’s official: after 10 years of noble service, Windows 10 will reach its end on October 14, 2025, and what a great decade it’s been. For many users, Microsoft redeemed itself after a run of disappointing operating systems – the mere mention of Windows 8 still sends some people into a rage – but Windows 10 got it right.
That’s why the announcement of Windows 11 came as a shock. It felt too soon, too rushed – and unnecessary. Many believed that Windows 10 deserved more time to marinate. At least until it finally managed to migrate the whole Control Panel to Settings.
Jokes aside, Windows 10 made its mark with its support of legacy software, flexibility and its introduction of enhanced cloud integration in the form of OneDrive, which made accessing your files from any internet-connected PC a breeze. This has been some 20+ years ago in the mid stages of the internet buildup. My young gun boss bought some switching equipment from a 3rd party resale outlet like Ebay. The university IT guys came in for an audit and they determined the equipment was still registered to a major defense contractor. It wasn’t long after that the university central IT department seized control purchasing and control of networking equipment.

It is actually not like that anymore. Mint Cinnamon is basically Win 7 and all the GUI works well. The only time I need the command line is if I am doing something highly technical like building a personal VPN server. Everything else is just Win 7 style GUI install/uninstall. All the settings and configurations are GUI.
There is not much that needs modifying unless you actually want to edit the nuts and bolts for some highly custom use. An average user would never even need to worry about that kind of stuff because the GUI is pretty full and customizable in it’s self.
And it just works... I have one install that is nine years old and I have never even updated it once and it runs as good as the day I installed it.

What about running it in virtual machine only when online?

Woops- i shoudla kept reading lol- why not use it online? The snapshots in Vm should protect it if it becomes infected- and once you disconnect, you can revert to earlier time quickly- are there more dangers liek viruses breaking through VM’s and infection the host?
you can actually ‘debloat windows 11’ and even make a minimum install of it it on a usb drive which automatically installs just the very basics, which is said to work on older machines- lots of Youtube videos showing how to do that- I have a min install for both 10 and 11

There is- use a vm and isntall whatever version of windows you like as a vm- i prefer windows 7- their solitaire is way better-
I have been looking for a new laptop with windows 10 for a few months. Prices have me looking for refurbished and due to my circumstances must be a 10 or 11 inch screen. And a Lenovo. Tough search but this thread confirms I must keep at it.

They are doing what Adobe did to it’s customers- they are essentially saying “We don’t care what you want- it’s our way or the highway- either pay us big bucks, or go elsewhere- Although win 11 isn’t monthly subscription like adobe moved to- it is forcing users to pay big dollars to upgrade just for hte ‘privilege’ of fighting with a new bug riddled os that has a hard time running on even the latest machines-
Sadly companies today do not care what their customer base thinks or wants- it’s a lousy attitude, and shows a stubborn side by the companies that is unimaginable-
I had a long drawn out argument with Adobe tech when i tried ot reinstall my phtooshop and couldn’t because their servers for previous versions no longer worked- i paid big $$ for the program, and it looked like i was out that money and the program- they wanted me to buy their monthly subscription- offering me a scant 3 months ‘reduced price’ (not free)-
I told several different techs at adobe what they were doign was flat out theft of a product as the original TOs never mentioned that they could pull the plug on the program anytime they liked-
long story short- they assured me there was nothign that coudl be done- that the only recourse was to pay monthly for the new photoshop- well, turns otu htere is soemthign that can be done IF you still have hte comptuter that the old version of photoshop is on- you CAN Deactivate your old copy so that you can put it on your new comp-
What burns me is that the Techs had to know this workaround, yet they kept it hidden from me- hopign i would buy their monthly sub- (The answer is to start photoshop on the old comp in admin mode- then you can deactivate it and reactivate on new comp— i ran across the suggestion after many many many days and hours of researchign how to deactivate it)

Have you checked your BIOS? Your computer may have TPMS 2.0 but it was never enabled. If it does, the only way to enable it is in BIOS. There are also a few other BIOS settings that need to be changed to allow win 11. You may be surprised.
A search will give me all settings but I haven’t waded through BIOS in over a decade. I’ll try it soon and report back here. Just don’t want to turn the machine into a doorstop. I think that my computer is near being able for win 11 with the changes.
Yes you must research your eBay seller. Dell outlet- refurnished was very good for laptops in 2020-22. I looked last week and not so good. Check out VipOutlet... they are kinda the reseller for Walmart. Both are in Arkansas. VIP also sells via eBay and Walmart.com, with different prices for an item than the Vip website. I have bought from Vip and Dell refurbished. Ebay used too.
That is a very good option, and if you have a computer that does not quite meet the official minimum... it will probably help a lot. If you do a clean install which will wipe out all the crap that manufacturers add you are already in pretty good shape. Then you can look up how to get rid of things from Microsoft that you probably will never use. Here one of the links to Tiny11.

Sort of. Not “protect” but revert. A minor inconvenience, well worth it.

None that I know of but that’s why I do backups on the host too.

Quite certain, it’s a known issue (Lenovo).. The NEXT models came with it. The CPU is also not supported, and no one knows why. Supposedly, MS didn’t test each and every type, core count, and speed of CPU, but some wonder if there is an underlying security reason that no one wants to discuss.
K thanks- i wasn’t sure- I’m thinkin of using windows 7 but having a VM with linux to go online with- I tried sandbox in windows 11 and it hosed the system bad- had to reinstall- not sure what happened- don’t wanna go through that again lol-
That's a crock of horse dung. Do you have any idea how many millions of people are still using WinXP (~5.5 million as of last year)? This is just a Micro$loth scare tactic (and this is coming from a 30-year *NIX guy).
