Delta CEO says crew on Toronto plane that crash-landed, flipped was experienced

The Delta flight crew on board the jet that crash-landed and flipped over in Toronto was experienced and trained for such ordeals, the airline’s CEO said Wednesday — as he poured cold water on fears about mass Federal Aviation Agency layoffs under President Trump.

Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian praised the actions of the flight crew who quickly evacuated the plane when it crashed at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Monday, insisting they were familiar with wintry conditions there.

“All these pilots train for these conditions,” Bastian told “CBS Mornings,” adding that “there is one level of safety at Delta.”

The people on the plane were lucky that the wings ripped off.

That is where the fuel tanks are.

Apparently...not enough

Pilot forums are claiming CPT was a new ATP…

The captain had just gotten his ATP?! If correct, that would be highly concerning. The normal path would be ATP -> FO -> THEN Captain.

I heard the same.

Yeah, probably reading things into the statement that don’t make sense since we all know the CPT would have at least an ATP in type and seniority. So would be the sim instructor who was acting as CPT and the FO being the new ATP. Still kinda weird if true. And of course, Rumor Control alleges the FO was a she, which would mean She was PF and the CPT/Instructor was PNF, handling the radio.

Sorry to spread internet rumors. And worse, read crap into it. Just didn’t make sense to me.

But the wind shear theory seems to be realistic.

There is one level of safety at Delta. There’s another level of safety for Endeavour Air, Detla’s partner.
Why is Bastian flapping his yap about this? Where’s the Endeavour CEO?

Oh really, then who are they and what exactly is their experience?

High sink rate, was not in landing attitude at touch down which is nose high flare. There were strong winds that day which can cause a lot of wind shear near the ground. If you do not carry extra speed one could run out of elevator authority to raise the nose or even stall it above the runway instead of on the runway. The black boxes will show all the control inputs, speeds, etc. I would suspect the FAA already knows what really happened.

Yep. If I do something only a few times, can I not say I’m “experienced”?

While deftly removing both wings.

Seriously though, that must have been one }{€££ of a ride. Thank God there were as few casualties as there were.

The whole situation is amazing.

I just seen the vids on this... that was a real HARD landing. understandable seeing the head wind was quite strong and the plane dropped hard when entering the ground air speed.

Can someone connect the dots for me?

Do You want Me to do that with a Fine Point Sharpie or one of those big, fat, wide ones ?

PS- I have crappy handwriting, so it's going to be ugly either way. The Dalmation will vouch for that. She's now completely black.

I read on another site that experienced pilots looking at the video believed the rate of descent was too rapid causing a hard landing which could have caused landing gear failure and when a wing tip dug in the ground the cross wind flipped the aircraft. That’s one theory.

Another is that Delta is a super saturated DEI company publicizing that DEI is part of every function within the corporation. Therefore the fact they hid the pilots’ identity is proof there is something to hide.

Certainly there are more floating about.

Congrats on your Son! My son is in USAF UPT currently on his way to fly C-17’s. I agree with you on the check airman. I’d say both careers are over.

This is not the same FR it was years ago. I remember when we were all praising that female pilot that landed a very shot up and crippled A-10 some time ago. Now the very mention of a female pilot sends y’all into a fit.

(“All these pilots train for these conditions,” Bastian told)

Do they train for a wing ripping off?

<> <> <>

OK, students, pay attention to this next lesson, because the cost to present this exercise is very costly, as every time we rip a wing off an aircraft to teach you what to do, it takes another one of our aircraft out of inventory permanently. Oh, and one more thing, make sure to keep your seat belts on until we come to a complete stop.

“I don’t want some pilot that’s going to flip my plane upside down not know what they’re doing.”

Not even if they have 10,000 hours on a flying video game?

I think wind shear was most definitely involved. The big questions will be was the airspeed on approach adequate to compensate, and what did the crew do in response to the wind shear. And of course, there’s always the possibility that in addition to any wind shear, the crew could have also made an unrelated error in how they handled the aircraft, or maybe had an incorrect flap setting, etc.

Almost never does an accident occur because of one isolated factor. The famous Swiss cheese model says that accidents occur when a number of contributing factors, none of which are capable of causing an accident in isolation, all line up at the same time to trigger an accident.
