Gambling addiction has soared since the legalization of sports betting in most American states, reveals a new study.

Researchers found a “dramatic” increase in sports betting and gambling addiction help-seeking since the landmark Murphy v. NCAA Supreme Court decision in 2018 paved the way for states to legalize gambling on sports.

Since the ruling, researchers from the University of California San Diego Qualcomm Institute and School of Medicine found a “staggering” growth in the sportsbook industry.

The number of states with operational sportsbooks grew from one in 2017 to 38 last year while total sports wagers skyrocketed from US $4.9 billion in 2017 to $121.1 billion in 2023, with 94% of wagers during 2023 placed online.

In AZ the sports betting biz (Cesars, MGM, etc) are tied into the Indian casinos and the Pro teams. Infact the primary advertisers on billboards in Phx are the Sports Betting people, the lawyers, and the pot dispensaries.

Pete Rose remains banned from the Baseball Hall of Fame, but MLB and all of the major sports take money from the online betting rackets. The owners are greedy and lack morality. It’s an indictment of American society.

Pete Rose violated the cardinal rule of baseball, by betting on games in which he had a “duty to perform”, according to the rules of the game. .

The Pete Rose case is fundamentally distinct from discussions about gambling on sports by the general public.

Gambling, pot, no cash bail, and I hear they’re now thinking of legalizing prostitution. Such lofty ideals these days Democrats have.

I’ve been a dope fiend and I’ve been a compulsive gambler, playing poker machines. Gambling was worse.

“Wondering how many KC bettors got the rug pulled out from under them thinking the Superbowl wasn’t going to be rigged.

Or that it was going to be rigged in their favor.”

I don’t know about rigging anything, but I do know that Philly kicked Washington’s butt and they showed up for the game.. between the Chiefs and the Eagles the seasonal records were almost identical the Chiefs had the heavier lift trying for the “threepeat” and the Eagles are no slouch and rose to the challenge! I had no problem going into that game thinking the Eagles were probably going to take it.

Plus Chiefs had that whole Swifty thing and a lot of publicity and just riding high on that wave... and probably partying a little more taking it a little easy, relaxing laying back on the laurels... that s*** always works against success because someone is hungrier - It’s probably even biblical.

The question mark was how would Jalen Hurts do? They basically sold out to stop Barkley and dared Hurts to beat them, and he did.

Yes I think he did bet on his team to win.

I was just mentioning Pete Rose, because he was a player and a manager, a participant in the games. People are bringing his case up regarding the expansion and approval of gambling in recent years. To me, his case is not relevant because players and coaches in sports are banned from gambling on their sports.

My sister almost got wiped out by her ex-husband’s sports betting. He was always “working quietly upstairs” - little did she know he was wiping out their funds, opening fraudulent credit cards to feed his habit - and wiped out the kids’ college funds that my dad had set up.

When she found out, she filed for divorce immediately. He’s with a new wife now and we wonder if he’s busy wiping her out too.

My husband was a counselor/therapist - his specialty was drugs and alcohol but he also studied gambling addiction - he told me it is the hardest addiction to break, worse than heroin.

Do you think players and coaches don’t bet on their sports? I’m guessing there’s a few. Proxy bets, if nothing more.
