A woman in Japan has been arrested for allegedly squashing a bun at a convenience store and leaving without buying the packet of bread.
Authorities in the southern city of Fukuoka confirmed to the BBC that the 40-year-old had been arrested on Monday for "criminal damage".
The woman, who said she was unemployed, claimed she "only checked the firmness of [the bun] by pressing lightly with my hand", according to police.
The woman had allegedly touched a bag of four black sesame and cream cheese buns. While the bag's wrapper was intact, police said one of the buns was damaged after she pressed it with her right thumb, and the entire bag could not be sold.
Police said the owner of the Lawson convenience store had claimed he had seen the woman squashing buns several times in the past.
As the woman was leaving the shop on Monday, the owner noticed the bun was damaged and he urged her to pay for the bread, according to police. The bag of buns cost about 180 yen (£0.95; $1.20).
She allegedly refused. After following her for 1km (0.6mi), the manager restrained her. The police were called to the scene and they arrested her.

Fukuoka and Find Out.

She-Bun.
Heh, heh...and GROAN!
No Thanks! LOL
Makes you wonder how a woman that criminal managed to stay out of prison for 40 years, is she connected?

The Mr. Whipple Rule
Well-played.
I travelled in Japan in the 1990s. One would regularly see “salarymen” in suits, sleeping on park benches after drinking too much at business dinners.
They would be fast asleep with briefcases, cell phones, and presumably, wallets, watches, etc...
Cops might rouse them if it got past 8 AM, but otherwise, no one bothered them or stole from them while they were passed out.
Black sesame and cream cheese buns. Doesn’t that sound yummy!
Failing to deflect attention from her crimes, she then tried to pass herself off as Irish by screaming like a bunshee.
Things are very different in Japan.
Not my Chinese wife. She is 67 and looks 45.
Japan vs here
Pretty dramatic difference in uncivil behavior.
Maybe in the 1980s, 1990s. Not now. They remain hot.
I would like to have seen that done here. There was one woman who was peeling back the husks of corn to find the ears with kernels all the way to the tip. If the kernels stopped a half inch short she would toss it aside and peel the next one. I finally got angry at her and said firmly “how much corn are you going to destroy to get the perfect ones. If you are that worried about the amount you’re getting I’ll buy you an extra ear.”. She turned bright red, sputtered something and took the ears she liked when she fled. I wish the store charged her for the other dozen she tore open.
Lol!!!
Put the bun-co squad on her.
In Singapore, they cane you for bun squashing. I wonder what she’ll get in Japan.
Here in the US, they won’t even arrest much less charge a person for bun squashing.
