A little over a year after Brent Sikkema was discovered dead in Brazil, the late New York gallerist’s husband has been charged with hiring someone to kill him.
Sikkema was the founder of the gallery formerly known as Sikkema Jenkins & Co., whose roster includes Kara Walker, Jeffrey Gibson, and Louis Fratino. The gallery recently renamed itself Sikkema Malloy Jenkins in recognition of Meg Malloy, a partner since 2005.
He was found stabbed to death in his Rio de Janeiro apartment in January 2024, setting off an investigation that captured the attention of the media, both in Brazil and in New York.

According to reports in the Brazilian media, Brent Sikkema and Daniel Sikkema had been seeking a divorce, the proceedings for which had grown “contentious,” according to an FBI announcement issued on Tuesday. Daniel had been reportedly seeking visitation rights with their son, as well as millions of dollars.
On Tuesday, Daniel Sikkema was charged in New York for murder-for-hire, passport fraud, and conspiracy to murder a person in a foreign country. He could now face a life sentence in prison.
The FBI said that Daniel had sent around $5,000 to the person who killed Brent—the hit man went unnamed in the FBI’s press release—and had planned to make another payment in the future.
In a statement, US attorney Danielle R. Sassoon said, “As alleged, Daniel Sikkema and his co-conspirator planned and carried out a cold-blooded plot to murder Sikkema’s husband, a United States citizen, in Brazil. This Office will doggedly pursue justice against those who murder United States citizens, whether at home or abroad.”
It takes a little thinking to realize they are gay.
Brent is more of a man’s name.
Sexual perverts are so very violent.
The “alphabets” are a violent bunch.
Nah, I knew a lot of gay guys that were softies when I worked at investment banks in the city.
They don’t need to be violent for what they’re doing to be wrong.
And it is.
To me, it’s also sexually deviant to cheat on someone you vowed to be loyal to until death in front of God.
Yet 70 percent of straight folks do it.
Gay marriage is a silly abomination.
Cheating is just an abomination.
If sexual perverts were very violent, there’s be WHOLE LOT more violent crimes than there already are.
The crimes broken aren’t violence but lack of concern for God’s word.
It’s just as bad.
Deep down inside, they weren’t really that gay.
Not a whole lot of thinking.
But gay or straight, this is horrible. Humans are humans. Prayers up.
I start with the premise that that gay people are insane by definition.
It doesn’t matter who you love,or sometimes murder.
Who the F are these people and why is it news.
Very famous in art circles.
Sometimes I feel like I’ve passed into an alternate universe when headlines like that actually make sense.
>> Who the F are these people
Couple of fags. Fag couple. I wonder if the judge will have mercy on the murderer being as he’s a widow now.
>> and why is it news.
It’s ARTnews! You know — highbrow banana and duct tape kinda stuff.
One of those is a crazy homo male prostitute. And the other was called Brian when he was alive.
They might have pranced around you looking silly but there is a reason the police hate going into a sexual pervert "domestic disturbance" more then they do that of normal people.
I stand by my statement.
Homos just doing what they do
Hey, idiots, a man cannot have a husband.
Pretend-marriage would have fixed all that.
Not happy or gay, just miserable.
God saw that man needed a suitable partner, so he created woman.
