Shelter Island pier is a great place to fish. You can watch the big Navy ships come and go and its really peaceful. Those guys fishing out on the pier must have got an eyeful.
Were they taking off? Landing? Doing a fly-by? To/from a carrier? A land base?

San Diego bay has had airplanes falling into it since the 1920's, long before anyone thought of DEI. This incident is barely news worthy.
You mean a Chevrolet Caprice? That goes back. I think the last time I saw one, it had a peeling landau roof.

Yes. A plane crash is a very, very expensive proposition.
Yup. Ryan Aviation right across the runway from where I used to work at General Dynamics. I think Ryan still had the original buildings at least through the late 1990s.
