Monty the giant Schnauzer wins the Westminster Dog Show
Channel 3000 News/AP ^ | Fenruary 12, 2025 | AP Staff

This time, the giant schnauzer went the full Monty.

After coming close in the last two years, Monty the giant schnauzer won the top prize at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show Tuesday night, leaving handler and co-owner Katie Bernardin almost too emotional to speak.

"He always tries so hard, and we're just proud of him," she told the crowd at Madison Square Garden.

The spirited schnauzer bested six other finalists to become the first of his breed tapped as Westminster's best in show, the most prestigious prize in the U.S. dog show world. The spirited schnauzer won the huge American Kennel Club championship in December, and he'd been a Westminster twice before.

A standout because of "everything from his attitude to his structure," Monty is bold, cocky and fun, according to co-owner Sandy Nordstrom.

"He's just a really cool dog," she said in an interview before his win, which will be his last. The 5-year-old is retiring from showing.

The runner-up was, for the third time, a whippet known as Bourbon. Other finalists included a bichon frisé called Neal, a Skye terrier named Archer, and a shih tzu called Comet who's been a finalist before.

Also in the mix were a German shepherd named Mercedes, who came in second last year, and an English springer spaniel called Freddie.

During a break between semifinal rounds, security personnel surrounded and ousted someone along the sidelines of the ring. The group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which has protested the dog show for years, said on X that a supporter was removed after holding a sign.

Westminster says it celebrates all dogs. The show champions that compete also are household pets, and some do therapy work, search-and-rescue or other canine jobs.

PETA hates dogs, so getting that person out of there probably saved him/ her from getting clocked.

That Giant Schnauzer is a gorgeous dog.

From Wiki:

A Schnauzer plural Schnauzer, (German: lit. ‘snouter’), is a dog breed type that originated in Germany from the 14th to 16th centuries. The term comes from the German word for “snout” and means colloquially “moustache”, or “whiskered snout”, because of the dog’s distinctively bearded snout. Initially it was called Wire-Haired Pinscher, while Schnauzer was adopted in 1879.

Other finalists included a bichon frisé... a Skye terrier... and a shih tzu

I might be biased but any dog that isn't big enough to rip the throat out of a home invader shouldn't be allowed to compete.....

BTW for years Westminsters Best in Show winner would go visit Trump. I’d like to see that again.

Some home invaders are smaller than others...

Brer Rat probably wouldn’t care for some of those smaller ones :)

My wife and I have 2 miniature schnauzers. Our daughter and her husband have 2 giant schnauzers. They are all beautiful, but we have our hands full when our daughter and SIL are traveling and we have 4 dogs in the house.

God Loves a Terrier
By Stephanie Scippio

“God loves a terrier, that’s because:
Small, sturdy, bright, and true, they give their love to you.
God didn’t miss a stitch,
Be a dog or be a bitch,
When he made the Norwich merrier with its cute little derrière.”

The Norwich terrier was adorable last night- my wife and i were really rooting for that dog to come out of the group but it didn’t even make the final 8.

Its great to see Westminster back at the Garden- the reaction from the crowd is worth the price of admission- and the crowd ALWAYS wants the Golden to win

I refuse to watch unless and until a wiener dog wins.

We are HUGE dog lovers in this household. We breed and train Treeing Walker Coon Hounds and Plott Hounds for hunting both Raccoon and Black Bear.

My last litter of six Walker Pups from this past Spring/Summer:

Previous year, two Plott pups who took over my Greenhouse and made it their playhouse. Arikara and Sioux. (Plotts come in a range of colors.)

My folks got a Black & Tan Dachshund the year I was born. We had ‘Otto Heinerich Von Boosh’ until both he and I were seventeen. Lots of good times with that dog, growing up.

He ‘patrolled’ the house all night, and would come ‘check on you’ a few times during the overnight. It was always a comfort to feel that wet nose on whatever part of you was sticking out of the bed at the time, LOL!

We had many wiener dogs. They'd dive under the covers, go all the way to the foot of the bed, then turn around and nestle up against you and sleep there all night.

I miss my doxies.

So glad you got to go. It’s on my ‘Bucket List,’ for sure! :)

Our Walker Dogs would be in this group - if they were better behaved, LOL!
