Intestinal worms could hold key to treating inflammatory bowel disease
Medical Xpress / James Cook University / Journal of Extracellular Vesicles ^ | Feb. 6, 2025 | Anne Borup et al

A four year-long research study has found that particles secreted by an intestinal worm may assist in treating inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), an ailment suffered by millions of people globally.

The paper found that extracellular vesicles (EVs, particles that cells release) from the worm Ascaris suum demonstrated a significant reduction in inflammation in mice that had colitis, a common IBD.

The research lays the groundwork for novel therapeutic approaches to IBD.

"I believe that the ultimate goal is to create semi-synthetic extracellular vesicles that can be used as new therapeutics for IBD and other chronic inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and type 2 diabetes," he said.

"And this is not like chemicals, this is not invasive, it's completely natural and if you can regulate it, you wouldn't expect to see any adverse effects. These kinds of therapeutics are coming from a natural source."

This worm is also known as a roundworm. There are debates whether it is the same in humans as in pigs.

A roundworm can apparently help with colitis, but worms gave been know to make overactive immune issues better.

Well. this will be quite an interruption to any kind of legitimate discussion of this topic, but here it goes:
-
“We Are The Worms” - Johnson & Tofte
(a parody of “We Are The World” by USA For Africa)
Used to be played on the old “Dr. Demento Show on the radio”...
-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86mLpbwwLPM
-
Sing along now:
. . . . .
There comes a time
When the rain begins to fall
And the worms come out of the ground.
There are people walking
Oh, it’s time to watch your step
Or your feet will make a squishy sound.

We are the worms
Out on the sidewalk.
We are the ones who make a squishy mess
So watch where you walk.
It’s a chance we’re taking
Leaving out homes underground
Though it’s true we’ll get a better tan,
Just you and me.

When we’re laying ‘round
Keep your eye out on the street.
If you don’t look out,
You’ll have worms under your feet.
We realize
Oh, that the sun is gonna come
And we’ll shrivel up like beef jerky from the heat.

We are the worms
Out on the pavement.
And when we hear a squish, we look around
To see where cousin Dave went.
It’s a stance we’re taking
‘Cause worms are people too
And we sure don’t want a better look
At your big shoe.

We are the worms
Out on the sidewalk.
We are the ones who make a squishy mess
So watch where you walk.
It’s a chance we’re taking
Leaving out homes underground
Though it’s true we’ll get a better tan,
Just you and me.

Oh, come on now, let me hear you.

We are the worms
Out on the pavement.
And when we hear a squish, we look around
To see where cousin Dave went.
It’s a stance we’re taking
‘Cause worms are people too
And we sure don’t want a better look
At your big shoe.

I’m sorry for your loss. I have Ulcerative Colitis, and I know from personal experience just how devastating these diseases can be.

I’m saddened to hear that.

That is too young. It must have been really bad, for him.

If people diagnosed with IBD have regularly scheduled colonoscopies, any roundworm should be easily found and eliminated, shouldn’t they? I’ve had periodic IBD for many years. Been having colonoscopies since I was 50. I’m 77 now. Never been told roundworm was the cause.

Very sorry to hear that. I lost my only brother back in 1995 at the age of 51 from a massive heart attack. Your brother must have suffered horribly with that disease. At least my brother never knew what hit him.
